"So this is Brooklyn huh?" I as
"we ain't even halfway cross the bridge addy, you haven't seen nothin yet" Jack comes in defense
"I've never been to Brooklyn before, have you?" Asks davey. At least I'm not going around lookin like a tourist. Honestly Dave needs to chill or else he's gonna get soaked for lookin out of place
"I spent a month there one night" says boots. I roll my eyes. I still don't see what's so different. It seems like just a smaller Manhattan to me so far. Before I know it the boy are screaming off the bridge to show how loud it is, and it is loud. Geez.
"Now listed addy if anyone does anything ya make ya noivous, just leave ok? If spot-"
I cut him off. "Listen I dunno who spot is but he don't make me noivous at all. I'm a big goil jack. I can take care of me self" he rolls his eyes at me. I know he cares and all but it just gets annoying
"Just watch out cuz them Brooklyn boys is big" boots says
"Please they cant be tha-" and I can't finish the sentance because before I know it I've run right into ome of the biggest people I've ever seen
"Goin somewhere?" The guy asks. He must be at least 6 11" and wide. His voice is deep. I back up a step
"Listen we need ya see spot" jack jumps in to my rescue. I would have been toast if he didn't cuz that boy looked mean.
"Go on in Kelly" he says and sneers at me as I pass through behind jack. Boys are everywhere. Jumping into the water. Carrying crates. I notice that they are almost staring at me. And I realize that I never put my hair back in my hat. I was going to because of everyone's warning but I forgot. I get a few whistles and called nicknames "dollface" "sweet cheeks" bleh makes me sick. I glare at them until we reach supposedly our destination
"Well if it ain't jack be nimble, jack be quick" I hear a voice say. I boy appears and hops down from a tall post. He looks about 16, a year older than I am. And he is tan, with dirty blonde hair. I notice a slingshot in his pocket and a pump cane through a belt loop in his pants. But most of all I notice a key necklace dangling from his neck
"Saw you moved up in the world spot, gotta river view and everythin" jack snaps me out of my mind. No doubt I was probably staring at the kid for a while because when I come back to reality he is looking right at me. But the way he is looking at me is as if he had known me his whole life. Like he was seeing a friend for the first time after coming home from war. His icy blue eyes were on mine and it was different from any feeling I had ever had before.
"I got a couple a real nice shooters here" boots says, breaking the eye contact. Spot smirked and turned towards boots. He takes the shooters loads them into his slingshot and seamlessly hits a bottle that was a solid 50 feet away. I can feel jacks angry eyes on me, he must've seen the whole, eye contact thingy.
"I've been hearing things from Harlem, Queens, all over. Little boids they're chirpin in my ear. Jacks newsies is playin like they's goin on strike.
"Yeah well we are goin on strike" I pipe up. Spots eyes flick towards me but immediately back to David when he speaks
"But were not playin"
"Oh yeah? Yeah?" He says and his face gets really close to Dave's face. You could sense the saracsm in his voice all the way in China. "What is this jacky boy some kind a walkin mouth?"
"Yeah he's a mouth. A mouth wit brains and if you got half a one you'll listen to what he's got to say" I smile with pride at my brothers comeback
"Well we've started this strike, but we can't do it alone so we're trying to get Newsies from all over to help." David starts to explain.
"So they told me, what did they tell you?" God could this kid be any more arrogant?
"That Spot Conlon is the most famous and respected newsie in all of New York, and probably everywhere else too. That you're the key, so you've gotta join because...well....you gotta!" I'm proud of davey, that was good thinkin on his feet. I think he'll fit in nicely, eventually.
"You're right jacky boy, brains" spot sits on a barrel "but I got brains too, and more than just half a one, how do I know you punks won't run the first time some goon comes atcha wit a club? How do I know youse got what it takes to win?" He has got to be the most stuck up Newsie there is, why am I not more angry at him?
"Because I'm tellin ya spot" jack says, I can tell he's getting angry. We should go soon.
"That ain't good enough jacky boy, ya gotta show me" and with that I grab jacks arms and start to pull him away.
"Addy let go of me!" Jack says his fists are balled up and his knuckles are turning white
"No Jack we gotta go" I say and with a big pull I manage to heave him away from nearly soaking spot.
We walk in near silence all the way back to Hattan.
