"Ya know for someone who usually wakes up at 5 am ya sure do like ta sleep late" it was bright in the room. Sunlight poured in through the window and spot was already up and dressed.
I sat up and scratched my head and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. Spot looked over at me and smirked. I smiled and looked down, playing with the blanket.
"What time is it?" I asked sleepily.
"Around 10"
"And you're not sellin?"
"Finished" how could he have possibly finished selling all his papers by 10 am. That's like, reached speed or something. I pulled off the blanket and stretched then stood up. I was very unsure about what to do with myself. It was my first time consciously sleeping at spots and not having somewhere to flee to in the morning. Luckily spot knew exactly what to do.
"Cmon" he gestured for me to follow him and we left his room and went down a short hall with a banister so you could see down into the main area. At the end of the hall were stairs that we went down. "This is where we sit and hang out and play poker and stuff" he told me. We passed that area and got to a larger room full of beds, "this is where the rest of the boys sleep, i wouldn't go in here if i was you. Those boysll be all over ya" his face got a bit stern. Then we left the lodging house which led us out to the dock. He gave me a tour of the dock, there really wasn't much to see. "And now to show you my favorite part of this whole place" he led me back into the lodging house and back upstairs and through the hall. We passed his room and to a dead end.
"This is your favorite place?" I asked. It was just an empty corner.
"Watch" he said. And then he pulled a secret door from the ceiling and down came some stairs. I followed him up them which led to a tiny dark room, I could hardly see anything and instinctively took spots hand. He grinned, and opened a door with his other hand. It led out to a small roof. The roof looked over the water and the skyline and the view was beautiful.
"Wow" I gasped, spot smiled. We looked out at the view. I let go of his hand and walked forward all the way to the edge of the roof.
"Careful" he warned and came up behind me, looking over my shoulder.
Spot and I stood there. Close to each other, taking in the sight. When a small newsie came running out of the small room and onto the roof.
"Spot!" He said alarmingly. Spot turned around, annoyed that he had been disrupted.
"Whadya want ike?" He said
" you better come downstairs quick" the small newsie-Ike- looked scared out of his pants .
"Why whatsa matta?" Spot sounded more concerned
"Bates" ike almost whispered the name. Spot shuttered and I saw him grip the cane in the belt loop tightly. He started towards the door and I just stood there on the roof, shocked, and confused. And then spot put his palms to his head and spun around and groaned.
"Addy, damn it what am I gonna do with addy" he didn't seem to be actually asking me what I was gonna do but I answered anyway.
"I can go back down to your room" I offered.
"No you, you can't be here right now" I looked down, why was I such a burden all of the sudden? Two seconds ago we were so close and now I'm just a burden. Also who is bates? "Ike." Spot turned to the small boy. "Get addy out of here"
"I can go to Ellie's" I offered another suggestion. I wanted to see ellie anyway, we had a lot to talk about.
"And what happened last time you went to Ellie's?" He said sarcastically
"But this time I'll have Ike with me!" I said gesturing to him. Spot took a deep breath. I could tell he was growing impatient and needed to get downstairs to see whoever bates was.
"Ok, fine whateva. Just..be safe ok?"
"Ok"I smiled, hoping he would smile back but instead he just turned around with an angry look on his face and went downstairs. Now it was just me and ike on the roof. Not as romantic as before.
"Alright follow me" said the boy. He must have been 12 or 13. He took me down the secret stairs and through the hallway. Creeping quietly as a mouse. I could see off the railing of the hallway into the main room, spot, and a boy I don recognize, and a girl. She had long blonde hair and deep brown eyes. I accidentally caught eye contact with her and she looked angry. Instead of taking me downstairs ike brought me Into spots room and opened the window.
"See that ivy there?" He said pointing at the wall outside the window. "There's a ladder hidden under under. We're gonna climb down it, follow me" he climbed down the latter, hidden by ivy. I followed him, admittedly I was a bit terrified.
As we walked to Ellie's - I had to lead the way because I knew where it was and ike didn't- I figured I would take to opportunity to try and Weasley some information out of the gangly boy.
"So, whos bates" I ask innocently and turn to ike.
"Spot probably would want me tellin you dat" he kicked some rocks in the street as we walked along.
"Ok but we don't have to tell spot that you told me" my bargain was only met with a chuckle.
"Ha, he would find out anyway. Have ya eva met the guy?" I wanted to counter this sarcastic comment by asking if he had ever kissed spot or slept in his bed multiple times but seeing as I wasn't exactly spots girl, he probably wouldn't want that information getting out.
"Well maybe you can just tell me why spot doesn't like bates" we were nearly at Ellie's and I was desperate to get some sort of clue about who this person was before I got to her house so that we could talk about it.
Ike sighed "bates betrayed spot real bad"
"In what way?" I knew that once I got ike started I could get more information out of him. Unfortunately we reached Ellie's right at that moment.
"Sorry, I gotta go, buissiness ta attend to an' all" and just like that he was gone and I had to shimmey up the tall tree and into Ellie's window that was always left unlocked and a touch open Incase I needed to get it.
"Addy!" She greeted me with a smile
"Hey ell." I sat down on the bay window seat. "Boy do I have some stuff to tell you"
