It's a Promise

1992

"Claire, can you promise me something." Kurt asked as he sat across from me.

"Sure what it is it?" I asked him without hesitation.

"When the time comes and you all must carry on without me I need you to promise me you'll always be there for Dave and Krist those two knuckle heads love you to death." Kurt said with a smile and I was beginning to get worried.

"I promise I will but what made you start talking like that you're scaring me Kurt." I said worry coloring my tone.

"It's nothing to worry about now Claire you'll know and you'll understand when it's time." Kurt said as he gave me a hug. I didn't know what he meant that night but I knew I would never forget that promise or those words no matter how hard I tried.

"Thank you Claire." Kurt said smiling softly. "How about we move onto something happier and watch a movie." Kurt said with a smile.

I nodded and smiled as he turned on  the movie. We didn't even pay attention to the name but it seemed to be interesting enough to keep us entertained. Dave and Krist hadn't come back from the bar. It was a rarity that Dave decided he wanted to out to the bar and an even bigger rarity that Kurt didn't want to go and he just wanted to lay around and watch movies because he had nothing better to do. I was never a real big public drinker so I stayed in with Kurt.

"Ya know Claire, this is nice we don't get to spend much time like this." Kurt commented as we were dozing off during the movie.

"Yeah, I need a cigarette wanna come smoke with me." I said as I finally hauled myself to my feet.

"Yeah sure, that sounds like a good idea." He said as he stood up following me.

Back then when I promised Kurt what I promised him I just thought he was being weird and cryptic again. Years later I learned that he knew how it would end. He wasn't being cryptic he just knew. That's what made that so weird and eerie for me, still kind of does every once in a while.

That night with Kurt drug in without a hitch. Dave and Krist came stumbling in drunk a little after one in the morning. Kurt and I were still cuddled up on the one bed dozing out. The rule was the drunk idiots sleep together and babysit themselves. Dave and Krist knew they were on their own. It was maybe twenty minutes after that them two managed to fall asleep. I didn't think either one of them  was going to be feeling very good in the morning considering the amount of alcohol they had clearly had to drink. Kurt and I surprisingly didn't have to pour them into bed like we had predicted we would have to. I guess we got lucky there because they did that themselves.
