I looked down at Spencer and sighed. I stepped out of the room and answered the call.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Hey there Sam." Stephen's kind voice greeted.
I tapped my foot up and down and scratched the back of my head.
"What do you want?" I asked wondering why he called me.
"I don't want anything." He said softly. I sensed he was embarrassed. I imagined his red cheeks. "I just wanted to check how you were doing, I'm just worried about you." He said.
"Worried about me huh?" I said. "Get connected to girls you find at cruddy fast food restaurants with half dead boyfriends often?" I joked. Well, at least I thought I was joking. I tend to not know if I'm joking or hurting someone's feelings. It's hard to tell because people hide their emotions too easily.
"Actually this may be surprising...." He said. "But you're the first." He laughed a little trying to make things less awkward.
"Well don't I feel special." I said. "I guess I'm okay then.... Um.... Just a little nervous and worried about him." I said shrugging although he couldn't see.
"Ahh." He said. "I see. Well... You're in my prayers." He said.
"Thanks..." I said. "I think."
"You're fine I'm not gonna preach to you." He laughed.
"Good." I said.
"But..." He said. "Anytime you want to talk I'm here."
"Thanks." I said. "I think Spencer would appreciate that.
"Spencer?" He asked.
"My boyfriend." I answered.
"Oh....Um I better be going now." He said.
It seemed as if every time I brought up the word boyfriend he got really uncomfortable.
I assume that's normal, he did flirt with me.... And I did flirt with him.
"Bye." I said.
"Bye." He said and hung up.
The line was blank and I set the phone away from my ear.
One of the nurses was staring at me and she automatically looked away.
That's when I noticed I was walking and talking, I was already down the hallway.
Oh.
I turned back and walked to his room.
Some of the nurses surrounded his bed.
"What's going on?" I asked.
I saw that his parents were there too.
"He's awake." The nurse answered.
