Sophie walked uncertainly to the football field. What am I even doing here... she stopped mid-thought, her brown eyes widening. The field was absolutely beautiful. Tall flood lights spotlighted the field, where the football team ran through drills to warm up. Music blared from the speakers overhead, currently blasting a familiar sounding pop song that had everyone bobbing their heads. Students laughed together eating food from the concessions stands, the savory aromas wafting through the air.
"Sophie!" Marella yelled, skipping over to where she stood dumbstruck. She led Sophie to an area by the field a little less crowded, where Dex was happily eating barbecue chips.
"I can't believe you're here! You don't seem like a football girl." Marella exclaimed, while she attempted to steal a handful of chips from Dex. He drew the bag quickly away, scowling.
"My chips!" Dex said, but it really sounded like "mm scheps". Sophie explained how she had been asked by Fitz to come to the game.
"I see..." Marella commented, raising an eyebrow. Sophie blushed. Dex, feeling the potential awkwardness, held out his chips to Sophie.
"Oh, you offer her chips, but not me?! What is this?!!!" Marella scoffed, then added, "I'm buying my own chips!" With this, she flounced away in mock anger.
Dex smiled evilly. Sophie rolled her eyes.
"What do you usually do at football games?" Sophie asked Dex, who was now breaking into a churro that had been cleverly stashed in his belt.
"Usually we watch the game and talk. Let's go to the bleachers, the game's about to start."
They made their way to the stands, which were quickly filling up. Sophie and Dex spotted Marella, who had saved room for them.
"If you've come for seats, you must offer a gift." Marella told them professionally, and blocked their seats with her legs. Dex offered his squished churro to her, wiggling it back and forth. Marella watched in disgust as the cinnamon sugar fell off.
"Actually... you can have them for free." She said finally. Sophie and Dex high fived each other and sat down. The trio watched the game until halftime, when Sophie excused herself to use the restroom.
As she was coming back to the bleachers, Sophie spotted the cheerleaders giving their halftime show. They flipped, rolled, and somersaulted expertly around each other. Sophie watched in awe as they made a human pyramid, and didn't realize she would be in the way of the football team until too late.
Sophie was thrown off her feet by the first player, who was running backwards in order to exchange an insult with another behind him. He, of course, being a football player, had more balance than Sophie and easily caught himself. Sophie fell hard on her rear, but was unscathed.
The rest of the team seemed either not to notice or care, jogging around her. Sophie was struggling to get up when one came back. He helped her to her feet, tan arms gently lifting her up.
"Sorry about that, Alfred's a little thick." Sophie faced turned hot. She tried to say thank you, but her stupid throat just wouldn't let it out. Finally, she forced out a quiet "Thank you."
He nodded his head and smiled. Sophie tried to guess who it was, but his helmet and pads made him impossible to identify. The coach yelled for the team, and the boy ran off. Sophie squinted at his retreating form. Number 26... who's that?
