Something has led to this very moment in time for a reason.
Erik Mueller lives in a building across from a little café. He happens to work at that café. It's owned by his closest, longest, and best friend and so when Erik needed a job he got one there.
Today, however, his alarm decided not to go off. Then, his shower wouldn't work. And to top it all off, he didn't wake up early enough to put his work clothes in the dryer. So, he just called his friend/boss and said he wasn't gonna make it to work on time. His friend didn't have a problem since he was early every other day and has never missed one.
So after taking a cold shower and putting on a clean shirt and jeans, he decided to go to the roof for some fresh air. He grabbed his keys, locked the apartment, and headed up the stairs.
Erik doesn't usually stick his nose where it didn't belong. If someone wanted to tell him something they would and he didn't see any valid reason to know someone else's personal business. Which is why he doesn't listen to the arguing couple as he passes their door or knock on the door of someone who's doorstep is covered in packages.
It's also why he doesn't open the door to the roof all the way when he see a girl standing on it.
He knows everyone who lives in this building but he doesn't recognize this girl. Her light brown hair falls down to her waist, flying around her face as the wind blows through it. She looks back and Erik thinks her crystal blue eyes have spotted him but she doesn't say anything.
He watches as the girl steps out of her shoes and places a note under them. She steps up onto the ledge of the roof and stares down. Erik looks around and sees how the roof has small puddles, indicating it was just raining. There's a rainbow in the distance but Erik doesn't notice it as he watches the girl turn and start walking along the roof.
A little bit of relief washes through him, his mind convincing him that the girl is just an adrenaline junkie, walking on the edge. Literally.
But then she stops moving and stares around her again. Erik slowly pushes the door open more, his heart pumping adrenaline through his body. His mind takes back the adrenaline junkie stuff and dread begins filling him.
His mind keeps shouting what she's about to do over and over but Erik won't accept it. If he did, his mind would go back to when he was a child and the Christmas when he was twelve. He didn't want to go back there.
The girl inches forwards, lifting her arms and taking one last deep breath.
One last breath before she jumps.
