I’m not sure how I managed it but I had gotten the job at Starbucks, they called the day after my interview, resulting in me canceling the rest of the interviews I had scheduled. Apparently my resume was pretty good but my story of what I’ve been through and what I wanted to do was even better. Although I see it more as a ‘cancer perk’ as my favorite book would quote. But at least this ‘perk’ would actually help me out. I have been working at Starbucks for 1 week now, training almost the whole time. It came easily to me. I mean, it’s not that hard to make a drink. Especially tea and the occasional coffee. And the pay wasn’t all that bad either. I might be able to fill in that money gap of my parents. And today would be my first day on the job not ‘under the wing’ of Jerry. He was the assistant manager, pretty nice and fun guy with a real love for teas and coffees.
“Amie!!!” Jesy’s distinguishable, loud voice echoed from somewhere downstairs into my room. “Get your arse down here!”
I was dressed in my ‘work’ clothes: a nice, non hole-y pair of blue jeans, one of my many green Starbucks shirt (it was really just a green polo-green like their logo- with their logo on a pocket over the left chest), my ‘apron’ was at work, my hair was in a high ponytail, and I was wearing my dark green Converse shoes I had bought. I mean, why not? They matched the shirt perfectly and I had plenty to wear with them. Today will be my first ‘on my own’ and I was looking forward to it. The people were nice and it didn’t hurt to get some coupons for coffee and tea. I quickly unplugged my iPhone from its charger, left my room, and scurried down the stairs. Jesy was at the kitchen bar, phone to her ear. She waved at me and gestured to a piece of toast on a plate surrounded by fruit. Clearly, she wants something from me if she’s making me breakfast.
“Hold on, Amie’s right here.” Jesy said into the phone as she put it down onto the countertop. “Good morning!” She chirped happily. “I made you some toast and cut up some fruit for you.”
“What do you want?” I asked, sitting down.
“Do I have to want something?” She raised an eyebrow.
“Jesy, I’ve known you forever. You don’t cook unless you want something.” I laughed.
“True.” She chuckled. “Anyways, One Direction- you know that boy band you met a week ago- is getting together tonight for a little party and they invited us- as in your amazing roommates Little Mix- and yourself to come along. So, you up?”
“I have work you know. That thing where I go get money?” I asked rhetorically, beginning to eat my toast.
“Oh shush.” She rolled her eyes. “It would be after work, someone will come by and pick you up and bring you to wherever we’re going.” She clarified.
“What makes you think I want to party in my Starbucks outfit?” I asked, popping some strawberries into my mouth.
“Well I can always bring you something to change into.” She suggested.
“Fine. Bring me something of mine. Just a shirt should be good.” I brushed the crumbs off my hands and threw the paper plate into the garbage.
“Does that mean you will go?” Her voice squeaked with excitement.
“Of course!” I smiled. “I would have gone anyways, no need to bribe me. But I’d like to know who is picking me up.”
“Hold on.” Jesy held up her hand as she pulled the phone back up to her ear. “Hey! Okay, so she’s coming.” She nodded a bit. “Of course!” She mimicked me. “Alright, so you can pick her up?” She asked. “Yah, that Starbucks.” She directed her attention towards me. “Zayn will pick you up.”
“My shift ends at 3:00. And tell him that I’d prefer if he didn’t come inside. I don’t want to be known for knowing One Direction if that makes sense. I’d like a normal atmosphere at work.” I instructed her.
“Alright, drama queen.” Jesy mumbled then flashed me a smile. “Hey, so her shift at work ends at 3:00 but don’t go into Starbucks, just text her or something.” She laughed at something Zayn said over the phone. “Alright. See you tonight.”
“Alright, so we’re all good then?” I asked slipping my small Vera Bradley purse over my shoulder that my grandmum had bought for me at a resale store a little while ago.
“Yah. Zayn will be picking you up. He said he’d text you when he gets there.” She nodded.
Footsteps quickly pounded down the stairs. In a matter of seconds Perrie walked into the kitchen. Her hair was slightly wavy and a bit damp at the ends. She had on light makeup, mainly just black eyeliner that winged out at the end. She grabbed a banana that was next to Jesy as she gave us a salute.
“Perrie will drop you off. Have fun at work and make teas for people I guess. I’ll go shower.” With that Jesy turned around and left the kitchen, stifling a yawn.
“Alright, you good to go?” Perrie asked as she popped a piece of the banana into her mouth.
“Yup.” I attempted to sound excited but a yawn had already escaped my lips. What can I say, yawns are contagious.
“I think you need some caffeine. Good thing you’ll be at Starbucks.” Perrie winked as she grabbed a set of keys. “Let’s roll.” She declared.
“You, my friend, are far too awake.” I laughed as I followed her out.
“What can I say, I’m an early bird.” Perrie shrugged as she unlocked the Kia Soul.
“Speaking of which, I was shocked Jesy was even awake.” I replied, slipping into the passenger seat.
“She wanted a hot shower….and Jade tends to use all of it. So she got up early. After her fifth alarm.” Perrie chuckled.
“That girl just loves her long steamy showers.” I rolled my eyes.
“If only she had someone to share it with.” Perrie winked.
I started laughing so hard I started choking on, well, air. “And this, this is why I need to be home more often.” I waved my hand over my face as a few tears left my face.
“You know fanning yourself is doing absolutely nothing.” Perrie sassed as she whipped a tissue at me.
“You know what.” I grumbled as I wiped a few tears away.
“No, I don’t know what.” Perrie said matter-of-factly.
“Neither do I….” I chuckled.
“Well, hopefully you wake up because we are at your job now.” Perrie unlocked the car.
“Thanks for dropping me off.” I smiled at her as I unbuckled. “I assume I’ll see you at the party tonight? Wait, do you know about the party?”
“Of course! I answered the phone, talked a bit, then gave it to Jesy so I could shower.” She listed off.
“Cool. Peace for now.” I shrugged as I opened the door and threw her a peace sign.
“Oh, how very hipster of you.” Perrie smirked.
“Look who’s talking!” I waved goodbye to her as I entered the local Starbucks.
