Eirlys/Lord Astor/Lady Lane             {Eirlys' thought}

-----------------------------------

"It's raining."

"Yes, it is, my lord."

{I look at the clear blue sky. Trying to hold back my tears. The late Lord and Lady Astor were good people. They're always polite to the servants.

From the corner of my eyes, I spot the Lanes. They detach themselves from the crowd and walk towards us. Master Ren...no Lord Astor is still kneeling in front of the gravestones with his head down. What do they think they're doing? Can't they leave Lord Astor alone? Right the Lanes always want to marry their daughter to Lord Astor. I walk towards them and intercept the incoming guests.}

"Oh! Eirlys. We just want to give our heartfelt condolences to Lord Astor.

Losing both of his parents within 2 weeks.

This poor kid. He must be in need of a warm hug."

{Lady Lane barely looks at me. Yes, of course Lord Astor would like a hug from you and your daughter. Are you sure the word hug and Lord Astor can be used in the same sentence?}

"Lord Astor needs some privacy.

Maybe the hug can wait."

"Oh, it's alright.

We are very good friend with Ren.

I'm sure he would love us to be there with him.

We are not some distant relative who cannot even offer support when one needs it."

{Are you implying that I am that said 'some distant relative'? Lady Lane does not like me very much especially after finding out I help the late Lady Astor with managing the household. I give her a smile.}

"Lord Astor's order is that no one is supposed to go near him, so I suppose even a great friend like you have to wait."

{Of course there is no such order from him. But I'm sure he would not like to see Lady Lane, a firm supporter of the Queen, in front of his mother's grave.}

"Now, young lady..."

"Eirlys."

"My lord, the Lanes are..."

"Let's go home."

"Ren! You poor boy!"

{The emotionless mask he has put on slips. Lord Astor glares at the Lanes with disgust and hatred.}

"Leave. This place is not for people like you."

{I can feel the power of compulsion vibrating through his words. The Lanes turn visibly paler. Without giving them a second glance, Lord Astor walk away.}

"Eirlys."

{I am still catching up with him. His legs are too long. Now he is apparently annoyed with my speed. He stands some distance in front of me, a small frown on his face and offering me his hand. I look at the hand, unsure what to do with it. He never holds my hand, except when I was quite small. It's not proper for a lord to hold hand with someone who isn't his fiancee.}

"Eirlys, my hand doesn't bite."

{Without waiting for my response, he grab my hand. It's warm. Like the hand he offered me when he rescued me from the street on that snowy day. He then places his head on my shoulder and gently strokes my head.}

"They are gone. They are finally free."

{I hesitantly raise my hand and return the hug.}

"My lord, legend has it that souls turn into stars in the sky. I'm sure Lady Astor must be very happy now, living among the stars. She always liked things that sparkles."
