THE FIRST YEAR HE WAS THERE,

Kim Namjoon was just like Jung Hoseok. Clueless, ambitious, oblivious to the world. He was so happy he'd gotten the job at a renowned hospital- even landing a spot as the junior resident under a radiology specialist. It was all sunshine and rainbows, every day being a new experience for him to live and learn the exact way he wanted ever since he'd learned about medicine. His criminology degree sat in his office, hanging on a nail, ready to be used as evidence that he took double majors.

He remembered his mentor- Dr Lee- who told him that one day, Namjoon would take over him and take in a junior again. That he'd teach his junior all the tricks that Dr Lee would teach him. That he was talented and very suitable to be a doctor. All the things that didn't lead to Namjoon having to stay in a quiet, stale wing.

Everything was bright- the colours in the hospital were a shade of mint green, pastel rainbows, the occasional white wall. Patients were always wearing smiles on their faces, not having to go through two different wings. Everything was alright. The West Wing didn't exist back then.

Namjoon even met a fellow junior in the A&E department named Kim Seokjin. Surreal, compassionate, hardworking. He already knew he'd have a hard time trying to keep himself in the neutral friendzone. Hell, he looked good even in his atrocious mint green scrubs. Namjoon was often at a point where he was unable to focus on his work because of Seokjin walking into the office.

He thought that he had landed the jackpot- his job was great, his colleagues were great, he was getting along well with everyone and everything. He even had great patients, who were kind to him even though they were undergoing treatment. The ambience and environment at his workplace seemed unrealistically humane, especially for such a famed hospital that strived for perfection in everything they did.

But the world had never been nice to Kim Namjoon- he had to work for everything he had and even harder if he wanted something on the side. His promotions never came easy, and even his degree was a painstaking process- he had to work part time while struggling to finish assignments, not because his family was poor or anything, but because his family literally didn't exist.

His dad was in prison and his mother had died when he was young.

Which was what led him to the Radiology department, and healthcare in general. He wanted to help people- had a passion for it- and enjoyed the feeling of knowing that somebody he helped, out there, was able to live their life without a qualm. He wanted to break free from the notorious line of crime his family had imposed on him, break any relations he had with that kind of fleeing life, live as a doctor and be able to feel safe every second. He'd seen what the criminal life had done to his Father, his Uncle, even his grandfather, and he knew what they lived was anything but safe.

And so, with a plan in his head and a bag in his hands, he escaped with his scholarship to the National University, and eventually found himself in Moraka General Hospital, full of ambition and want.

THE SECOND YEAR HE WAS THERE,

Kim Namjoon got a promotion. After all his hard work and effort, Dr Lee finally walked into the junior residents' office one day and laid a piece of paper down before his very eyes, notifying him of his promotion. He was to be an official, permanent resident, assistant to Dr Lee but allowed to perform in procedures alongside him and carry out simple tasks alone. It wasn't very much, not yet what he had yearned to achieve, but it was enough at that point of time, and all he could do was stare in awe and jump up in excitement, hugging his mentor.
