Becky was slipping into the dress that Brock bought her for the gala tonight. He had insisted on a spa day for her that ended with her hair and makeup getting done. He promised that all women here did this, and she deserved it too. He had done his best to spoil her and keep her mind off of things. It wasn't what she had thought she needed, but it was definitely nice to get away.
The dress was midnight blue, floor length, a-line with cap sleeves. She tried to tell him it was too much, but he had insisted that she would fit right in. The saleswoman had found a beautiful pair of silver heels and matching wristlet purse to go with it.
She finished getting ready and went out to find Brock waiting for her with a small box. "Seriously Brock? I don't need all of this!"
"Yes, you do. What's the use of making all this money if I don't spend it on anyone. I know you don't need it, but you came here to get away. Let me spoil you, give you a taste of the city. You're going to be a mother in about eight months. As much as you deserve it, we both know this won't happen very often anymore. So this week, you are going to live it up and pretend to be a single lady. Even if you have to do it on the arm of your handsome brother."
She smiled at him as he put the sapphire necklace and bracelet on her and waited for her to put the earrings on. "Thank you Brock. And you do look very handsome tonight. I suppose our chariot awaits?"
He nodded, and she put her arm in his. A town car was waiting for them downstairs, and Becky was quiet once again. She was in awe of all the bright lights and skyscrapers. She knew that this life wasn't for her, but it was definitely a nice way to spend time with her brother and do some thinking in such an amazing city. She hadn't gotten far on the thinking front...she still had no idea how to tell Tom about the baby.
She put her hand on her belly, and Brock noticed. "How have you been feeling? I never got a chance to ask."
"Not too bad so far, slight morning sickness, a little more tired, definitely more emotional. It's still early though. Alli said I need to talk to the doctor about riding. I never thought much about it before. It won't be easy if he tells me I can't."
He nodded, "how are you feeling about the baby...just the baby? Are you over the shock?"
"Almost. I never thought I'd be here though. Babies seemed so much farther off in the plan. I guess that's what happens when you're drunk and stupid."
"Nah, I would imagine that you were just caught up in the moment."
She nodded. The car stopped, and they had arrived. "You're sure about this?"
He smiled, "everybody that I work with has been hearing me talk about you all week. They're dying to meet you Beck."
She smiled, "alright then." He got out first and then took her arm in his.
When they walked in, she immediately realized that Brock was exactly right. Every woman here was as dressed up as she was. He started walking towards a particular couple and stopped in front of them.
"Brock! There you are, I was wondering if you were going to blow this off for something more exciting," an older man with gray hair said smiling.
"Of course not sir. Becky, I'd like you to meet my boss, Henry and his wife, Angela. Henry, Angela, this is my sister, Becky."
She was a little intimidated by all of the people, but the two in front of her had the warmest smiles. "It's nice to meet you." She held out her hand to Henry, who shook it and then Angela pulled her into a hug.
"It's nice to meet you too dear." Henry smiled, "it's a pleasure to meet the woman that can get this man to actually take a day off. It's also not every day that we get to meet a family member of one of my best lawyers in the firm."
