Becky was getting ready on Sunday afternoon. Brock had been unusually quiet most of the day. He knocked on her door as she was fixing her hair and makeup. "Come in."
He sat down on the bed and watched her, "what's going on Beck?"
"What do you mean? I'm going to supper with Chris."
"I know, but...do I need to remind you that you're pregnant and in love with someone else?"
She smiled a little, stopped, and sat down next to him, "no. I'm going to tell him. I just wanted to know what it would be like to go out on a date...is that so wrong?"
"I probably wouldn't care if he wasn't a friend," he mumbled.
"I'm not going to do anything...I just enjoyed talking to him last night and didn't think it would do any harm. I know it's silly."
"It's not, just take it easy on him."
"Ok," she got up and finished getting ready.
Chris was right on time. Brock buzzed him up, and they talked for a minute while she put on her shoes. She had chosen leggings and a tunic dress and flats.
"Chris." She smiled at him, a little nervous surprisingly.
"Becky, you look great. Ready?"
She nodded, grabbed her purse, and managed to ignore the disapproving look that Brock was giving her.
The drive was short to the restaurant. She couldn't keep herself from sitting and just taking in the city every time she was in a car, so it was quiet too.
"You're really enjoying the change of scenery aren't you?" He asked as she got out of the car and put her arm in his.
"I really am...I don't think this life is for me but it is definitely a nice vacation." She returned his smile.
They went in, were seated right away, and then ordered quickly. After their drinks came, they started talking. She knew she needed to come clean about her situation. After a few more minutes, she worked up the courage, "Chris...I need to confess something."
He raised one eyebrow, "ok?"
"The thing is...I feel like I have used you a little bit."
"How so?"
"Well...the reason I came to New York was to think things through. I'm pregnant."
"Congratulations."
"Hmm, thank you. It wasn't planned...at all. How much do you know about me? From Brock, I mean."
"Well, he warned me that you weren't planning on moving anytime soon. Before he had told me that you were the youngest, the only girl, and that, between your brothers and dad, there wasn't a guy around brave enough to date you."
"That about sums it up. Up until a month or so ago, I had never dated anyone. Something crazy and amazing happened and I found myself in a relationship with my oldest brother's best friend. We have been keeping it a secret, but I found out last week that I'm pregnant. The relationship is so new...I'm scared to tell him, so I came here to get away and think. When you asked me to dinner, I selfishly thought I could get a taste of what I had missed growing up before I become a mom."
"How do you feel about him?"
"I love him."
He nodded, "well, in the very short time that I've known you, I can say, fairly honestly, that I doubt he could keep from falling in love with you."
