Introduction

In this lesson, you will add to your knowledge of what you learned in the previous lesson by learning more about making quoted sentences. In this lesson, we will look at how to quote sentences of suggestion (~자고) and sentences of question (~냐고). In addition, you will learn how to form direct quotes. Lets get started.

I said "Lets...": ~자고

In Lesson 48, you learned how to add ~자 to the stems of verbs in order to have the meaning "Lets...". For example:

밥을 먹자! = Lets eat!

공원에 가자! = Lets go to the park

Putting a quote on these sentences is done very easily, and all you need to do is add "고" after "자" in the quoted part of the sentences:

그는 밥을 먹자고 했어 = He said "Lets eat!"

그는 공원에 가자고 했어 = He said "Lets go to the park"

선생님은 수업 시간 동안 열심히 공부하자고 했어요 = The teacher said "let's study hard" during class time

More examples:

저의 친구가 같이 여행하자고 했지만 제가 돈이 없어서 갈 수 없었어요 = My friend said "lets travel together," but I had no money, so I couldn't go (more naturally translated to: My friend wanted to go traveling together, but I didn't have any money, so I couldn't go)
