Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn a few different grammatical forms that you can make by adding "~ㄹ/을까(요)" to the ends of words. This form can actually have a variety of meanings depending on the context, and I will introduce you to some of these meanings in this lesson. In the upcoming future lessons, you will continue to learn about ways "~ㄹ/을까(요)" can be used in Korean. Let's get started with this lesson.

~Shall...: ~ㄹ/을까(요)

The most difficult thing about the ending ~ㄹ/을까(요) is that it has many translations depending on the context of the sentence. What makes it even more confusing is that some of these translations are very similar in meaning - not only to each other, but also to other grammatical principles. Nonetheless, I will try to distinguish each subtle meaning of ~ㄹ/을까(요) in the upcoming sections and lessons.

The first and most basic one you should know is the meaning of "Shall..." InLesson 48 you learned about the ending ~ㄹ/을래(요) and how it can also be used to have this meaning. For example:

지금 갈래요? = Shall we go now?

영화를 볼래요? = Shall we watch a movie?

The simplest meaning of ~ㄹ/을까(요) can replace "~ㄹ래(요)" in these sentences:
