Chapter 30

Day’s perspective

We’ve travelled a day without rest. Usually, when I travelled, like with Tess, I always thought about her, resting because of her, stopping when she wanted. But this is a whole new thing.

Kaye and Nikolai move a whole lot faster than me, and if it weren’t for the fact that I was tortured a few days ago, I could have moved at a faster speed.

The pain was agonizing then. Like a creature crawled in and was bursting out, and my head was exploding—and no, it wasn’t funny at all. I saw a mash-up of things, Eden dying on me, Mother getting shot in the head, John running to the firing squad, their cries, filled with so much fear and agony, flooding my mind. They were screaming for me, but I couldn’t help, I was never able to…

And June. Meanwhile, June was everywhere. Me holding her as she died, dying because I shot her, because of the Alterer, and her blood staining my hands. She being cut up into pieces, body parts falling from her as Parker tried to get me to do something—but I can’t remember what was that something. She on her hospital bed, suffering because of the Alterer, and her screaming for me to stop the pain, to end her life, and I tremble, gun in my hand, as I pull the trigger…

“We’re here, at the broadcasting station I suspected June’s in. I’ve been here before,” Kaye says.

“Heavily guarded. Day, you’ve done this many times before, right?” Asks Nikolai.

He was referring to me breaking into heavily-guarded buildings unnoticed, back when I was still the Republic’s most-wanted criminal. I nod. “Back.” I instructed as we made our way to the back of the building filled with cameras, placing our footing lightly. Five guards stand, and we take them out easily.

“Hurry, put one on.” We throw the stolen uniforms over our current clothes. Just then, I spot someone exiting the back, motioning to a guy with a lab coat on.

“Amethyst,” Nikolai runs forward immediately, like the way I would run to Eden. But Amethyst is already gone, back inside the building.

“—the hell is she here?” Kaye catches up and scans her ID card onto the back door panel.

“Do you think I ever know what she’s up to?” Nikolai says coldly, trying to make up for his earlier vulnerability, but it’s too late. I saw the look in his eyes. He does care about her.

The room we enter is dark. “I’ve see one of these before at the bank. There’s a secret panel you can push, but if you push the wrong one you’re done for.”

“Anyone has a good gut feeling?” Nikolai’s voice echoes in the enclosed room.

“I doubt Parker’s too smart to change the passcode. Fourth from the right…” I hit the top panel of the fourth column from the right. It lights up in blue, a series of numbers beside it.

“Now what?”

I read the numbers. 13562489365127089.

“365,” I reply, hitting the three panels that say 3, 6 and 5. The wall flips and takes us by surprise, but luckily Nikolai and I react fast enough, stepping onto the board that stretches out as the floor retracts, and we reach the other side of the wall. Kaye isn’t as fast, and she falls into the pit, probably dead.

ffarwel, gorffwys yn awr*,"  Nikolai whispers.

“You’re Welsh,” I state, as we move along, hanging our heads low.

“Half. Kaye is—was—too.”

We move silently, and I approach a soldier in the corner who looks half drunk.

“We’re looking for June Iparis.”

“Fifth floor, first cell,” He says, not sober. Easy enough.

We arrive at the fifth floor and see that there is chaos.

“WHERE IS SHE?!” Parker is there, outside June’s cell and punches a soldier, furious. His face is so red it became comedic to look at. We hide behind the partition, peeking out, and see dead bodies on the floor.

“I’m sorry, Amethyst was here earlier.”

“WHAT?! She must have helped June, you son of a b—“

“Mr. Parker, here’s the CCTV footage you’ve asked for,” Says a woman. Parker clenches his fist, calming down.

“Deal with him,” Nods Parker as soldiers drag the guy he punched away. Soon, the floor is empty and we creep up to the cell, heads low, to confirm what we suspect.

June is gone.

*What Nikolai said-> Farewell, rest now

The reason why I made Nikolai and Amethyst half-Welsh is because I'm reading Clockwork Princess and I just think Cecily and Will speaking Welsh to each other was cool, so I wanted to try it out! Please comment if I made any mistakes with the Welsh up there, as I used Google Translate.
