Chapter 7
"Now, mind you, it's been quite a while since I've done this. You should be fine but there is a slight chance tha-" Life started but was interrupted by the alarms in the hub blaring.
"Why can I never finish a goddamn sentence around here?" Life grumbled as everyone else shot out of their seats.
"Toshiko, check the CCTV. Gwen, Owen go check on the prisoners. Ianto you're with me." Jack commanded striding out of the conference room.
"There seems to be a disturbance near city hall," Tosh said eyes scanning over the screen. "It's probably just some drunk but give me a second I'll pull up the live video feed."
"It may be just me, but I think that qualifies as a bit more than a disturbance."
With it's back turned to the camera a giant creature hefted up a car throwing into one of the nearby shops with an outraged bellow. The police were already on the scene pelting it with bullets that just ricocheted off of the chest plate it was wearing. The streets were a mess, most of the cars were either smashed or on fire and there wasn't a shop in sight that hadn't sustained substantial damage.
"See if you can focus in on its face," Jack said.
"Alright." Tosh said and a few clicks later it's face came into focus.
"Is that what I think it is?" Ianto asked squinting at the screen as though the image might change.
"If you think it's a puppy, then no. But if you think it's a giant Minotaur then yes you'd be correct." Life snapped back rolling her eyes.
"We gotta get out there then. No use standing about chatting, someone's gonna get hurt." Gwen said upon returning.
"Gee, wonder why none of us had thought of that, maybe because we need weapons that can harm an 8 foot 1,500 pound Minotaur in armor."
"Stop, both of you. We don't have time for this. We can't kill it, we don't know why it's here or where it came from. We can't capture it because even if we could get close enough we can't knock it out without about ten gallons of anesthesia. So what's left?" Jack said turning to them.
"What if we could knock him out without even having to go near him?" Owen suggested. "Minotaurs are basically just giant bulls, right? Animals have different hearing then humans do, we emit a frequency specific to his hearing and he will collapse with only a slight chance of brain damage."
"Perfect. Tosh get the emitter and find the frequency, Owen and Gwen grab some stun guns in case this goes south, Ianto bring the car round and Life you stay here."
"Excuse me?" Life said to Jack as the others left. "You have an immortal being that can heal and practically bring people back from the dead and you want me to house sit for you?"
"No, I want you to stay here because you're reckless and I don't want you endangering any members of my team with some stunt you pull." Jack retorted as he walked away.
"I've been alive longer than all of you combined, the one time I was reckless was about 300 years ago and someone died so I think I've learned my lesson," Life said almost jogging to keep up with Jack's long strides. "Plus I'm the only one who's ever dealt with a Minotaur before so... See you there."
Turning to look at her in confusion he stopped in his tracks as she started dissolving, unlike her brother she started glowing from the middle of her chest and it radiated outward. Glittering softly the shimmering light quickly engulfed her torso and snaked out onto her extremities. Before he could form a word she had turned into what might as well have been a floating ball of energy. The glowing, floating ball approximately the size of a softball bobbed once, almost as if in acknowledgment, them shot off towards city hall.
"Someone won the genetic lottery." Owen grumbled shaking his head as he passed by.
"I don't know about that," Jack responded shaking his head.
"What're you going on about? She can turn into that," he said gesturing vaguely in the direction Life had shot off into."She's immortal, can change her appearance, can bloody bring people back to life and God knows what else."
"Immortality is not a gift," Jack bit back watching as Ianto pulled the car around.
"Where'd Life go?" Ianto asked as Jack got into the car.
"She's meeting us there."
"Meeting us? How is she goi-,"
"Don't worry about it," Jack said cutting Ianto off. "Tosh! How's the frequency coming?"
"Done and ready to go, but I'm not sure how effective this is going to be." Toshiko responded.
Next to Jack, Ianto was driving, his featured schooled into a stoic expression. Nudging his hand on the counsel next to him Ianto curled his hand into a fist rather than look at him. Silently cursing himself for doing whatever it was that made Ianto mad he took Ianto's hand in his own bringing it up to his lips and kissing his knuckles softly. If they were all going to die at the hand of a giant Minotaur he wasn't going to let Ianto die mad at him.
