Namjoon's POV:
The soft voices and strangely familiar music of the television fill the otherwise quite room. I had been letting it blare in the background while I rested. It's one of those brief times between shows when we have a moment to breathe. A moment to stop and just rest in the seclusion of the hotel room. A noise in the background cuts through the steady buzz of the television. I look up from my book to see Jin yawning and stretching after his nap on the couch. With a sigh he pulls his legs up and snuggles into a blanket to watch the show. With him quite once again my attention turns back to the text in front of me. The story is a good one, not particularly intellectual or complex, in fact I would even go so far as to call it slightly predictable. But, somehow it is just enjoyable, a comforting read. It serves it's purpose as a break from the madness of the concerts well.I stay reading like this for hours, turning page after page letting my eyes glide over the words. Eventually it gets to the point where I am reading the same sentence over and over but its just not sinking in. Taking that as a sign, I mark my spot and shut the novel. For a moment I consider just staying on the couch and sleeping there, but Jin is still watching the television and I know that I won't sleep well. With a groan I get up and walk over to the bedroom. I only get about halfway before Jin calls my name.
"Joon! Come watch the news! It's about Refract!" Suddenly my exhaustion it gone. It's been over two weeks since we left, and though I had kept in contact we didn't really talk about the case.
Rushing back and vaulting over the back of the couch, I fix my eyes on the screen as Jin turns up the volume. The reporter gives a basic intro, all stuff that I've heard before, I hold my breath waiting to see what the news is. The screen flickers as they transition to live footage. A sea of reporters floods the step of the courthouse, each pushing and shoving to try to get to the front before the doors open. A man turns to address the camera.
"Today is the final day of the court case and Korea is holding it's breath to hear the final verdict. When the accusations towards the CEO of one of the most successful entertainment companies in Korea became public the nation was shocked. Right now the doors will open at any moment and we will finally see the outcome."
As he finishes his sentence I spy the heavy doors behind him beginning to crack open. As the other reporters notice murmurs sweep through the crowd, the jostling resumes with renewed strength. The journalist turns to focus on the doors. A veritable army of suits streams from the entrance, security makes their way straight to the pack of media setting up a barrier. Not even seconds after the barrier is in place more people exit the court.
Surrounded by them I see her. She walks near the front, her head held high. Even as I see that I can tell that the confidence is faked, she seems vulnerable and tired, spent after the long ordeal. Her mask is worn, I don't think that it would have lasted another week of the trail had it come to that. The cameras track her as the reporters lean over the barrier straining to get the microphones in the faces of anyone who makes the mistake of looking their way. Watching her walk I notice her bandmates surrounding her, strategically placing themselves between her and the cameras. It's only now that I see the sheer genius of the man who forced that mask upon Eunmi. He crafted her character in such an intricate way, it's as though he had planned for something like this to happen, though surely not with him as the villain. He had managed to fashion the mask in such a way that even her vulnerability has only served to strengthen the more than human character. Looking at her protected by her friends and chased by the media she is painted as a caged fairy, an angel with clipped wings, trapped and exposed, vulnerable to her tormenter. And only now has she been freed.
She continues to walk towards the car, escorted on all sides. However, just before she steps inside she stops and faces the crowd, looking directly at the lenses.
"Before I leave I just want to say thank you too everyone who stood behind us, even if you aren't here with us today I'm so grateful to your support. Without your help we never could have come to the results that we did. Thank you." With the final syllable those blues eyes of hers lock onto the camera and for a second it feels as though she can see me through the screen.
As I watch her say those words with feigned strength my mind drifts back to the day that we accompanied her in court, to when I heard just how far he had gone. Before that day I had thought that he was a criminal, a horrible man but after that I only saw him as a monster. Eunmi had never said that his actions ever went further than violence and threats, and then to see her say that in front of an entire court with him there.... I so clearly remember the snapping feeling in my chest at those words. The look on her face, the tears about to come pouring down. I wanted to hurt him. He deserved more than just a jail sentence, more than just loosing the company, more than just a fine.
But at least he'd be getting those.
