Namjoon's POV:
The night begins to draw closer towards the end, yet the surprise that Refract have been reminding us of the entire time still hasn't appeared. I turn to Hobi to ask if he knows anything, but before I can even get as far as the first syllable a sharp note cuts through the stadium. Speak of the devil. The song that begins to play in the dark is one that I only vaguely recall.
At first all that is audible is a lone piano, played slowly and simply as if by someone asleep. Though this lasts for barely half a minute, only giving time enough for the lights to slowly rise, casting a dim glow across the stage. Just as a new instrument joins in I can make out a figure in white curled up on the floor. The music begins to pick up, the once simple tune is now complex and intricate, a hopeful tone comes to light. It's now that the figure that I spotted before starts to stretch out as if waking up. It's when she stands that my suspicions are confirmed, again it is Eunmi alone on the stage.
Unlike the previous songs her moves are confident and with purpose, she has finally found her own feet after being set free. Her leaps and spins no longer give the appearance of something else dragging her about. Whilst the Intro and Interlude were breathtaking, this is on a whole new level. For the first time in a long time she looks truly happy. The freedom in her movements and the carefree expression on her her face is not faked. Even from here I can see that.
As I watch in wonder, enthralled by Eunmi, it almost goes unnoticed when the other members begin to move from the wings to join her. As they get closer to her the music rises, every movement they make is more intense than the one before. For a second they are all dancing together as though there are a single being. But then the music abruptly cuts out, they freeze on the spot. The suddenness of it makes me jump in my seat, I can hear my heart beating fast and hard from the shock. Without warning a high, clear voice slices through the silence. Though there are no embellishments to it, somehow the simplicity of the song is incredibly beautiful. It sends shivers through me, I can feel the goosebumps on my skin. For a moment I don't recognise the voice, then I see why. I have never heard Eunmi sing before.
Just as soon as that realisation crosses my mind her voice is joined by the others and the song once again picks up. But this time there's something different to the rest of the music. While I could have sworn that the earlier verses had a hopeful, happy tone, now it it decidedly darker and more threatening. It has an almost haunting quality to it. This unnerving difference lasts until the end of the song and even though the stage is silent once again, I can't help but feel as though something is about to go wrong, as though the story is not finished.
The members begin to leave, striding off stage, Eunmi is the last to go. For a breath she stops. She turns casting her eyes back over her shoulder at the crowd, and at that moment I swear that her gaze meets mine. That somehow she sees me alone. And then she looks away before following her teammates. I wonder if I imagined it, you know, wishful thinking and all. I mean she doesn't even know that we're here tonight.
"That. Was. Incredible!!!" My thoughts are interrupted by a squealing Hoseok on my right.
"Yeah," Yoongi seems almost as lost for words as I feel. However, Hobi doesn't seem to be affected in the same way...
"I can't believe that she sang! I can't believe that she can sing! I mean of course she can, she's Ari for gods sake! But, like, how did she hide this from everyone?! And then the dance, don't get me started on the dance omg! I mean it was just....." Thankfully the lights in the stadium come back on and cause him to stop rambling so that he can hear what Refract are saying.
As Refract say their goodbyes to the crowd and finish up I use it as an opportunity to collect myself. I'm still shocked from that final performance. She never ceases to amaze me, the way that she surprises me again and again. Even from the first time that I saw her she took my breath away.
I look around me to see that the stadium is emptying out slowly. I guess that this is our cue to go. I gather up our things and lead the others towards the seating exit. But instead of heading back to the car park we end up going deeper into the stadium. Following a route that I know all to well from our own concerts we make our way towards the dressing rooms. Finally our destination is in sight. Taking a deep breath I knock on the door. Slowly it swings open.
".... Joon?" Suddenly I'm swallowed in a hug.
"Hey." I return the embraced, it's so good to see her. I was so worried about her after we left during the trial, I felt so bad leaving her to deal with it alone. I missed her so much.
"Oi, you two get a room, bloody hell!"
I feel the blood rushing to my cheeks as I step back.
" It's great to see you, really. I thought I saw you at the end, but I wasn't sure, you didn't say anything."
"We wanted to surprise you. The others will be coming tommo...." My words are suddenly cut off.
"YOU CAN SING?!?!?!?"
"Haha, uhh I guess so. I prefer to rap though." She looks down embarrassed by Hobi's outburst, the dusting of pink on her cheeks makes me feel something in my chest.
"She's been coming to the vocal lessons with me, one of the producers heard her when we were at karaoke and was all like 'You. Vocal lessons. Tomorrow.'. We only released the instrumental version of Reborn so that we could shock everyone." Mijin interjects, sparing Eunmi from having to explain.
"You should come in and sit down."
About five minutes later I find myself sitting close up next to Eunmi. I'm beginning to suspect that Jin has been talking to the rest of Refract. The way that four girls managed to make it so that ten seats could only possibly fit six people is impressive. It reminds me of the array of ridiculous situations that we found ourselves in when she was staying with us. First there was the time that we got trapped in the store room together (which doesn't have locks btw), then there was the time that we were going to go on a picnic together but everyone else backed out. And at all of those occasions you could see a very particular glint in Jin's eye, a glint that I can definitely see in Gyuri's and Ying's eyes right now. Not that I really mind what they're doing......
