Getting It Together

For the past couple months I've been following the same routine. I wake up, study, clean the house, go to sleep.

Alpha Redwood says he appreciates the help I've been giving (so he says), but I'm getting the feeling that I'm getting in the way.

For one, during dinner Seth would always throw snide remarks my way like, 'Shayla, if you don't stop now your stomach is gonna blow up and fly away' and whenever we would go out he would say 'With all this extra weight, it's a wonder this car would move.

At first everyone would just laugh and brush it off, but soon enough the adults would seem to get tired of going the long way 'cause going up hills would make me nauseous, and cooking extra food so that I wouldn't get hungry.

Now I no longer eat anything besides a sandwhich for breakfast, and water throughout the day. At first I was used to it, but eventually the hunger pangs at night would drive my body, and the kids, crazy.

"Sweety, do you want some food? We made pasta " asked Luna Redwood.

Luna Redwood was a vain amd coldhearted person, but once you did something for her she turned into America's Sweetheart.

She loved the fact that I would clean the house for them, and that I wasn't screwing her husband.

"No thank you Ma'am, I ate this morning."

She looked at me disapprovingly:"You have to eat something, I can't have people sayin' that I starve my guests."

I rolled my eyes discreetly, of course it had to have been about her, "You're right. Thank you Mrs. Redwood, I'll eat later."

She sneered, but set it on the bedside drawers and left.

I'm 8 months pregnant now, which makes me even more anxious to see how Grant will play out with this whole custody thing.

So far I've had no sign of him, but one thing is for sure, I do NOT want to get too comfortable with myself.

I looked around my too tidy room and contemplated on whether I should make mess, just to find an excuse to clean something up.

Before I could make myself seem even more pathetic, my phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Yes, is this Shayla speaking? Shayla Lupus?"

Since I couldn't recognize the voice, I was a bit hesitant to actually answer "Ummm.. Who wants to know?"

"This is Clara Vera calling, we met a the diner a few months ago."

"Oh, Hi Dr. Vera, How are you?"

"I'm fine darling and please, call me Clara."

" Ok, Clara. Umm, did you need something?"

"Yes, I was calling to ask you if you've been keeping up with your prenatal visits to the doctor."

Why would she want to know that? "Yes I have. In fact I just went this week."

"Oh really? I haven't seen you come by; and considering that this clinic is the only one within a 150 mile radius, I would think that this would be your first choice in prenatal care."

"Umm.... Actually, I always go on your day off."

" My day off? What day is that?"

I considered telling her that I didn't wanna be checked by a doctor who can't even remember when her day off is; but so far she's been pretty civil towards me.

" Listen, Dr.- I mean Clara, as much as I am grateful for your concern, I'm afraid that even if I wanted to visit the clinic I have no insurance.

I heard silence, and for a moment I got a bit peeved off at the fact that she would hang up rudely

" It's on the house" she finally spoke up.

" But Dr.Ve-"

"Consider it a favor to your father." The line went dead. as the whisper of one out of many questions was left hanging on my lips.

Dr.Vera knew my dad?
