I clutched my stomach desperately like that could protect my child. My stomach felt weird, quite hard. I slowly sat up and weakly got up from the bed to go to the floor length mirror next to it. I lifted my night gown and would have nearly fainted. Right there between my hips was a distinct little bulge. I touched it and it felt hard. Suddenly I felt Carlisle’s touch on my shoulders. I turned around questioningly; maybe he had an answer for why I now had a visible baby bump that wasn’t there yesterday. He thought it through and started pacing. I walked up to him and held his hands to stop him. “Tell me,” I pleaded and held his hands in mine. “To me, it seems like the vampire gene is kicking in on the baby. It is just a theory, but it seems that in the first few weeks the growth was at a human pace, but now it changes to a vampire pace, not as fast as Renesmee’s growth but still faster.” I watched his face, but there weren’t any emotions, only an expression of deep thoughtfulness.

I thought through what he just said when something dawned on me. “Does that… Does that mean that the baby is fine and healthy? That he is just growing bigger and that produced the pain?” “Probably yes, I’m sorry. Maybe it was the wrong decision to make you have the baby. I’m so sorry that it is hurting you after I said that it is a normal pregnancy. Please forgive me,” he pleaded heartbroken. He sat on the bed with deep sadness and reproach in his eyes. “You don’t have to apologize for anything. It was my decision as well to keep it and above all there is only good news! The baby’s fine. That means that I didn’t miscarry, he is just growing. I couldn’t be more happy!” I told him with a smile. He looked at me with shock and confusion on his face. “The baby… is hurting you, Esme! That is not good, that could be fatal for you. Just remember what Bella had to go through. I don’t want that to happen to you, never.” “What do you want to say with that? That we should kill our child?” “No, of course not, I just want you to see the danger in this pregnancy. I know that I could never convince you to abort it,” he said quietly in the end. I sat next to him. “Carlisle, just trust me. I have a good feeling about this. Just remember Renesmee’s growth, our child’s growth is nowhere this fast. It could all turn out well. I only have to be more careful.”

He took me into his arms and kissed me softly. “Please don’t leave me, I can’t live without you. You are my world, my soul and my heart. Please, please…” he was sobbing. I stroked his jaw. “I will NEVER leave you. The baby and I will be fine. You’ll see in the course of the next months you will hold our child in your arms and I will be right at your side. I won’t leave you, love! Just trust me,” I pleaded with him. “I trust you,” he said and held me to him. He murmured something that sounded like a very old prayer. I only lay my head on his shoulder and hoped that indeed everything will be fine.

The rest of the day I had to spend in bed. I really wanted to go out, especially now when the pain completely stopped. I could hear Edward and Carlisle talking on the floor of our apartment but I couldn’t understand the words. Then they came into the room. “Esme, we talked it through and if you agree Edward and I will take over the examinations. It would be safer for us if the baby is progressing this fast and we know what it will need.” I nodded. “There is only one examination that we will have to make in the hospital to make the great check-up,” he explained,” Edward could do it today in the nearby hospital.” “Okay,” I agreed. As long as everything will be fine I actually preferred having only my family around me.

Rosalie then walked into the room. “Should I help you prepare?” she asked timidly. “Yes, thank you,” I said and looked around. The others already left the room. I got up awkwardly from lying in bed so long. Rosalie helped me getting into my clothes. I could only wear my dresses, the trousers wouldn’t fit anymore. I sat on the dressing table and Rose brushed my hair and braided it. “Thank you, Rose,” I said and smiled at her through the mirror. “Anytime Mom,” she answered with a loving smile. I smiled even more, it was very rare that the kids called me Mom and in fact Rosalie never called me that before.

I got up and hugged her. “I love you, daughter,” I whispered into her ear. “I love you, too.” “Are you ready, Esme?” Carlisle asked. Rosalie supported me with walking. I felt a little bit weak, but I rather think that this has something to do with the fact that I haven’t eaten anything all day.

We got into the living room and Alice handed me something to eat like on cue. I thanked her and ate it slowly. I could feel the worried glances from everyone. I couldn’t be angry with them, but they are behaving like I would be dying. After “dinner” Carlisle came with me to the hospital. Rosalie asked if she could come with us, too and we agreed. In the last few days she was really glued to me, but I liked it to spend some time with her.
