It was a rather sleepless night for me. My mind wandered, thinking back to how Nora looked in the hospital bed. From the nurses reaction alone, it's safe to say that she is a regular patient there, but why? I still don't understand why she can't have a simple surgery to fix her issue. There has to be something else wrong with her...
What time is it?
I turned over in my firm mattress to face a small led clock on my bedside table. The time flashed 4:37 am in big red numbers as my eyes finally adjusted to the light. The whole room was relatively silent besides the faint buzzing of the air conditioner, but then there was a slight ding from my laptop.
It must be them.
A few summers ago I met some friends online that I really connected with. Though their identity is unknown, they've always been there for me. I'm just the perfect rolemodel, aren't I? Talking to people online is the best thing to do as a young adult as myself.
My feet dragged along the carpet over to the computer where I sat myself down to talk to my friends. Three were online at the moment, but there are more where that came from.
Sunny99, FallenxAngel, 0Lizzy0, and RebelJem have logged into the chat room.
The words flickered a few times before Liz began to type her message already.
0Lizzy0: Hi friend!!!! How was your day? Omfg guess what??? I got a new puppy today! I named him Sloopy lol.
Reading Liz's message alone makes it feel like she's literally coming out of the screen to tell me. Still, I enjoy her energy because it is something I can't have at threw in the morning...
Slob101: Calm yourself. My God I cannot stand next to the almightly Liz and her personality. I bow to you madame!
I snorted to myself, waiting for a reply back or a message from one of the other three.
RebelJem: Are you alright? You seem a little different than usual. I mean, your constant arguments with Liz are memorable. I even prepared to write down the whole conversation too!
I felt a lump in my throat, and soon poured everything out to them. I don't know how many times I apologized to them. It was over fourth though. My voice was muffled by the thick walls, but quiet sounds of crying escaped me.
How can I just leave Nora at the hospital alone? She needs me there with her! She's all alone! She—
Sunny99: What? You like this girl or something? You're beginning to act gross. Like Liz gross.
FallenxAngel: Our little Slob is growing up! Awwwww man, I need to get a date...
I immediately typed in a rushed response to stop their minds from exploring further.
Slob101: No! No! No! First of all, she is just a friend (well we just met, but still) and plus I'm a girl too! Besides, I'm not even sure about... Forget it. I'm going back to bed. See you guys later!
I logged off as soon as I posted that message and jumped back into bed. My heart was racing, but why? We didn't talk about anything embarrassing, so how?
Nora
No, no, no! We just met! Plus I can't burden her any more than she already is. I'm just a dunce after all. How could I even believe that anything more than a friendship would develop? I'm really such an idiot.
Nora
I laid in my bed awake, watching the seconds, minutes, and hours tick by. It wasn't until the alarm went off that I was aware that I had stayed up all night. It's only the second day of classes, and here I am skipping...
I'm such an idiot! I'm a disappointment!... I should just go and see how Nora is then... I'm worried about her...
It wasn't until I was in front of the hospital that I noticed how out of it I was. Still, my mind thought only of Nora who could be feeling a lot better now or worse. Once my eyes landed on her, it was safe to say she was okay. Her color had come back finally, but more than that her smile seemed genuine this time. Nora beckoned me into her room with a simple nod and tugged onto my shirt as soon as I was close enough.
"Are you ok? You look... down..." She said, tightening her grip. Her beautiful eyes looked as if they could see right through my lies and worry.
I can't tell her that I was thinking about her all night. That would be a little weird...
"Oh you know... Just some late gaming..." I brushed her off. Nora squinted, acting as if she didn't believe me.
"O... Ok... Hey, doesn't our class start soon? Why don't you... hurry back?" Nora questioned me. Her face lowered to show that she was blaming herself for me missing my classes today.
Oh... She's pretty adorable when she's upset...
"Don't worry about it! It's fine... I think..." I exclaimed. Nora didn't look too convinced and insisted that my priority should be school. "Anyways, when are you getting released?" She sighed, hiding a slight grin.
"They came a little bit ago... I guess I'll be let out in a half an hour!" She pumped her thin arm into the air out of happiness. For the first time, I noticed that there was a small bouquet of flowers on her lap.
Her parents must have came... I guess I was wrong after all.
"Oh, who got you the flowers? They are spectacular!" Her face turned cold, emitting a sense of shame and despair.
"Just some... Um... Friends of mine..." She stuttered. Nora's face turned a bright red color, but I wasn't too sure if it was from embarrassment or possibly even anger. Her emotions can seem so obvious at some points, but other times it's hard to tell exactly how she is feeling...
It's probably not from her "friends"... Maybe the bouquet was from her parents! Or from someone that she likes...
"Wow! They must really love you!..." I tried to sound happy for her, but instead it came out as being jealous or just snobby. Nora chuckled quietly, turning her face upwards to show a pained smile.
"They um... They don't... I think they just... pity me..." She choked out. My own fake smile disappeared and was replaced with a confused gaze.
Who wouldn't like Nora? It's not like she could actually hurt a fly...
"Oh, I see... How about we... go get something to eat? As soon as you're released that is!" She nodded slowly with a comforting grin.
We both tended to ourselves, ignoring the elephant in the room. It was easy to say that neither of us were willing to admit how heavy the room felt at the moment. My seat was right beside her bed, but to me it felt like the distance between us had grown bigger once again. My eyes caught a glimpse of Nora's hand that was on her lap. It was trembling.
"Are you... Are you ok, Nora?" I asked her, not wanting to create anymore tension between us. She shook her head in response before turning over in her bed to face me.
"...Yes, of course. It's just that... Forget it..." She stopped in her tracks, flipping again in the bed once more.
I think I just made everything worse. Nice going, Adelle!
Soon enough, a nurse walked in. Her voice was muffled, so I couldn't tell what she was saying. Nora was rather joyful, so whatever the nurse did say must've been good news. After they left, Nora practically hopped out of the bed and waltzed over to a nearby drawer to pull out a pair of clean clothes.
"I'll be done in just a minute... Could you... Could you wait outside for me?" Instead of arguing with Nora or question her, I stepped out and sat myself down in a chair right outside the room.
I still want to know who brought her those flowers...
