I picked up the feather and inspected it, front to back. It was smooth and so light that I wondered if it was fake. The color was dark, an obsidian black, and light barely shown through it when I held it up to the street light. But the most shocking part about it was the fact that this feather was longer than normal...much longer than normal. I held it up to my forearm to give myself a good reference of the size. It extended a little bit past the joint where my arm bent.
'What has a feather this long??' I inquired, 'I know Mothman has wings...or are they wings like a m-'
SNAP
My head shot up to what sounded like a twig or dried leaves breaking. My senses were once again heightened and I began to scan my surroundings for what seemed like the millionth time that night.
No one. Absolutely no one was there, but I kept staring at the house in front of me. Something seemed off. I couldn't tell, nor even see if there was someone hiding in the bushes, but I could feel eyes on me. Something was watching and tracking every move I was making...
After having a small stare down contest with the house, the fence gate suddenly flew open and my dad stood there in what I could tell was an aggravated stance.
"Jessica! What are you doing in the middle of the street at this time!? Do you know that you have to go to school tomorrow?" My dad remarked.
"Ugh...," I groaned out as I jogged back to my house and up the driveway where my dad was, "Dad, something happened and there's a crater in the street...go look at it!"
"I will tomorrow, but that doesn't mean you had to go outside at this time! Do you know someone could be out there waiting to kidnap you?!"
"Yes I know..."
"Well if you know then why did you do it?"
I couldn't explain to my dad why I did it, not to mention show him the feather that was now residing inside my jacket and tucked away, but something drew me to go investigate and I got a good piece of evidence out of it.
Once I made it back into my room, I looked for something to store the feather in. Nothing was long enough to store a feather that size, until my eyes landed on a poster container that my friend had given me. 'God bless you Gabby," I excitedly thought.
Since I was back in my room, I now had good lighting to really inspect the feather. The color of it didn't change and it was still that dark obsidian black. The tendrils were neatly aligned except for a few that were bent out of place, but I could now see something that definitely looked out of place. Bringing the tip of the feather closer to my eyes, I noticed black streaks going across it. I moved my hand to touch the black mark on the feather and it transferred to my fingers, like powder. Wiping a couple more of the streaks off, it dawned on me that this feather had been burned.
"What the hell...," I said to myself.
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the red light of my digital clock and saw the new time that was being displayed.
3:53 A.M.
"Shit!" I hissed under my breath.
I quickly grabbed the poster container and placed the feather inside of it delicately, shocked by how perfectly it fit inside there. Hopefully, no one would open up the container, but for a safety measure I shoved the whole thing underneath my bed where it was out of site to anyone who walked in my room.
I turned off the lights and went back to bed. I had to be up in two more hours, but falling asleep seemed impossible at that point. Since finding the feather, all I could now think about was what the hell has a feather that long and why was it burned!?
