Chapter Twelve: Mari and Kain

Y/n's Pov

We took off soon after Mack fixed up the truck, there was a vehicle tailing behind us. We had to stop because of a wall of Z's.. but only some of them were chained. Tommy ran off to get a better angle, I leaned over the top of the truck, aiming at the 'junker' car's participants. One of them dropped dead and I smirked, knowing it was Tommy who shot. I kept my eyes on the people when Garnett said to let them have it.. the truck. I growled at one of the men who were in the junker. They were all looking at me with a hunger in their eyes.. TF? I mentally facepalmed seeing my outfit.. Still the clothes from the Philly compound with 10's shirt.

As I climbed out of the back with Doc's bag and my own, one of them grabbed my ass as I landed. I shoved him back and Evan came over. "Dontcha know you shouldn't lay a hand on a woman?" The guy that grabbed me aimed a pistol at Evan, I aimed my sling at his head. "Don't even try. I will kill all of you where you stand." He chuckled at my small form so I turned and shot one of the chained Z's with my slingshot. He gulped and lowered his gun. We all went for the junker.

Mack and Addy were in the very front, Doc and 10k in the very back, Evan and I sitting on the top, and the rest inside the car. As we pulled up to a family being surrounded by the men, Warren stopped the car hastily and I fell off the side, barely landing on my feet. Evan hopped over asking if I was ok, grabbing my shoulder to see if I was ok. I pushed him back. "Ev, I'm fine." He turned me and I jumped back quickly as he looked at the dirt on my ass. I bumped into Tommy but didn't care. "For fucks sake. Ev!" He chuckled and I stepped away from 10, muttering an apology. I looked at his eyes and noticed him glaring slightly at Evan but brushed it off.

We found out the family was robbing the thugs.. thus all of the thugs being killed. I took two of the pistols, no one noticing except for Ev. This time, when on the Junker, Doc and 10 switched with Mack and Addy. I went to climb on the top with Ev but as I got up there, Tommy grabbed my wrist, dragging me roughly into his lap. My face slightly flushed red. "10?" He looked back at Ev with a glare and nodded to Warren to drive.

"You almost fell off. Like this, you won't fall." I sighed and leaned back against his chest. "Fine." We rode like that for about an hour before pulling up to the truck and seeing the family. I covered my mouth seeing the children. Tommy gulped, pulling me closer before we got out and back into the normal truck. I bit my thumb, memories flowing through my mind.

"Ms. Y/n, did you find anything?" I smiled down at Kain, one of the kids that I saved. "Yep!" I held up the line of fish I caught. "Wow!" Kain's younger sister Maria ran up to us. "You are good at fishing Y/n." I smiled at her. Neither of them looked like they were even teens yet.

Kain began stuffing his face soon after his fish was cooked. Mari waited patiently for hers. Kain looked up at me. "So, Ms. Y/n.. tell us another story about that guy you like." Mari smiled. "Story! Story!

I chuckled and thought for a moment. "He is super cute. You wouldn't think of him as a strong guy unless you saw him shirtless. He isn't exactly.." "Does he have muscle?" I giggled at Mari's question. "Lots."

"Thank you for taking good care of us."  Kain smiled at me. "We owe you our lives/"

Kain! Mari!" The two twins ran through the hallway, infected swarming after them. I was on a catwalk above them. I retch a hand down to pull them up. Kain lifting Mari up so she could be safe. I pulled her up and grabbed his arm. 

Right before he was completely up, a Z grabbed his leg and yanked him out of my reach. My eyes widened as it tore into his chest.. I grabbed my sling and started rapidly firing. Mari yelled out his name. His eyes were staring at me, terror.. I gulped. 

"Kain Noah Raines. I give you mercy."

I shot him and grabbed Mari's hand. As we were running, the catwalk opened out into a large walkway, several infected turned to us. I shot as many as I could with my sling but soon ran out of objects to shoot. I pulled out a knife and heard a shriek. 

Turning abruptly, I saw Mari's pale face. Her small foot was caught in the floor. I turned. "Mari! I'll cover you!" She fought to get her foot out. I stabbed and slashed as many as I could.

I glanced back to see her panicked eyes staring at the Z's closing in. I ran to her, taking her shoe off and picking her up. I ran to the deadend.. Where Kain died. She clung to me.

"Y-Y-/n!" I looked back to see none of the dead had slowed down. I jumped. In midair, I set Mari down on the other side of the catwalk. I fell flat on my back. The Z's started falling down the catwalk and towards me. I looked up at Mari.

"Meet me by the entrance. That area is cleared. I'll be there-" I stabbed a Z and looked up to see her nod at me and bolt. I gulped and fought all of them, looking down in disgust of all of my clothes coated in blood. I quickly found the entrance and walked out.

Evan was asleep in the truck, sound asleep. He had no care in the world of the Z's beating on his windows. I walked over and picked up a few rocks, shooting the Z's one by one. When they were all down, I looked in panic to see Evan was the only one in the truck. "Mari?" Hearing my voice, his eyes opened slowly. "Y/n?" He stepped out of the truck. "W-What happened? You look a mess.." I choked on my words. "Z's.. Got.. Kain.." Hearing a weak growl, I turned and saw Mari. She was limping slightly. I smiled. "Oh Mari-"

Evan grabbed my shoulder. "Mari?" I looked up at her face. She had dirt and blood all of it. There was horror in my eyes as I saw that clear bite mark on her shoulder. Her, normally, beautiful blue eyes, were bright white.

She growled at us and ran.. Well limped.. As fast as she could. I covered my mouth with my hands. Evan pulled me close to him, covering my eyes with one hand. He spoke quietly. "Mari.. Hannah Raines.. I give you mercy."

I heard a single gunshot.
