Merlin's POV
"Arthur, time to wake up," I said softly, trying to wake up the sleeping king in a calm manner. His beautiful blue eyes opened slowly, and I swiftly looked away so I would not find myself lost in their beauty. He flicked his sandy coloured hair and sat up. He didn't smile, or even look at me. He just sighed.
"Polish my chain mail Merlin, I am going on a hunting trip... On my own." He ordered, his voice lacked emotion. I nodded and grabbed the chain mail. "Why don't you just use magic? Wouldn't it be so much easier and waste less time?"
"Magic is outlawed, if I used it, you would have to execute me," I reminded him, tears threatening to spill from my eyes. He looked down and gestured to let me work.
I left his chambers and sighed. Arthur promised to allow magic in Camelot after I saved him, but I guess he didn't care about me anymore. I am just a servant, not a friend. No one special.
Arthur's POV
As soon as Merlin left the room, I cried. Tears just kept coming. Why did my beautiful wife have to die? And was am I being such a dollop head towards Merlin? He is my friend, and I'm making him hide his identity because he fears death. I vowed to help his kind, but I have failed him. He must hate me. I don't know why he saved me, but it bet he regrets it.
And I could've sworn I saw his eyes fill with tears just before he left. I am worthless and horrible. I caused my best friend to cry. Merlin deserves much more than a servant. He is the greatest sorcerer to ever walk the earth Gaius had told me, yet he is still running after me, cleaning my amour and polishing my boots.
I got out of bed and began to prepare for my hunting trip. I just needed time alone. "Maybe tomorrow I will be able to face my kingdom and begin to make a change and become the king I was before. And the friend I was before." I whispered to myself. Those words I had whispered to myself every morning for 6 days.
