Chapter 24: Royal BenefitsShadé
"May I see your mother," I asked him cautiously.
The smile that our children put on his face suddenly disappeared, being replaced by a stoic expression. "I thought you didn't want to see my family," he pointed out as he finally looked at me, intensely.
I lowered my gaze to the brown curls of Caine's hair. "I know. But I want to speak to her and I don't want her to live her life without meeting her grandchildren," I said. Neither Vincent's parents nor my parents have ever met the twins. I could at least give her the pleasure of meeting her grandchildren. "I was hoping that maybe they'll be able to cheer her up," I added, thinking of how heartbroken she could be.
He smiled again. "You would make a great Queen."
"But, I don't want to be Queen," I admitted, knowing we had to have this conversation at some point.
"Why not," he questioned, his countenance frowning.
"Because... I can't trust the Royal Household of none of your-"
"You only met those of Windsor," he quickly interrupted.
I disregarded his input and continued. "Your family dislikes me and I'm quite sure that there are more Tiffanies out there who gets jealous because I had your kids. I don't know who's out there to kill me! I don't know, Vincent," I said, standing up and stressfully placing my hands on my hips.
"The press will be on your as-butt if we aren't together, Shadé," he said, keeping in mind that the twins were on his lap. His voice sounded as if he was trying to keep himself together, but was getting more agitated by the second.
"Are you telling me that marrying you is the only way I'll be safe from them," I asked, turning toward him.
"No... I'm...," he trailed off and sighed exasperatedly. "You two go play, mommy and daddy has to talk," he said, averting his words to the twins. They slid off his lap and trotted back to their suitcase to play with whatever else they could pull out of there.
I was watching them as they did so, that is, until I felt Vincent take my hand and pull me onto his lap. One of his arms circled around my waist while the other lied across the width of my thighs.
"Look at me, Love," he demanded, patting my thigh for emphasis.
I darted my gaze to his piercing, blue orbs.
"I don't want to tell you that, but it is true. I need to marry you and I want to marry you. Not because you had my children, but because I'm in love with you and I want you and my children to be safe," he said as he took my hand in his and kissed my knuckles firmly.
"We're not going to be safe living here," I disagreed as I shook my head and closed my eyes.
"Yes you will. If there's anyone that you feel threatened by, you can always fire them and we'll hire some-"
"No, Vincent. I'm not going to be a reason someone lost their job. I know how hard it is for people to find jobs," I interrupted him.
"I don't care about them. I'm thinking about you and those two. If they really want their job, they wouldn't threaten you or our kids," he said frustratingly as his face began to redden.
I cupped his face in my hands and stared deeply into his eyes. They held hints of fear and hurt that I knew I was unintentionally causing. "Calm down, Vincent. Please," I begged him desperately before planting a gentle kiss on his forehead.
"I'm calm. I'm calm. But could you please do me a favor," he asked, brokenly as he lied his head against my shoulder.
"What is it," I asked, pushing him away from me to look into his eyes.
