Chapter 17:
I eventually took a shower.
'Emryl' I called out. To be a part of a pack, that was something I haven't thought of. All his time, I've never thought of belonging elsewhere.'
' Emryl' I called out again.
'Yes,' was her only reply.
'What do you think?'
'I think we should return to our pack'
'We don't have a pack to return to,' I reasoned.
'Because you abandoned our pack, you abandoned our mate.' She lashed at me.
'You and I both know that's not the case, Emryl'
She was silent for a long time. 'I think you should accept it'
To say I was surprised by her decision is an understatement. She was always adamant about going back that I never considered her agreeing to this. 'What made you change your mind?'
'Acceptance' was her answer. 'I think it's time for us to .... Move on'
It broke my heart to hear her say this. Between the two of us, it was Emryl who kept hoping that there was still a chance. A chance that John would realize how foolish his actions were but that day never came.
'I'm sorry that I wasn't enough, Emryl.' I closed my eyes, turned off the shower. 'Don't say that,' she contradicted. 'There are things we can't control. It's not your fault. It's not our fault. I know that now.'
I didn't say anything. There's nothing I could say at that moment.
'I'm just glad you're back. You're all I have.'
I never had the chance to hear what she had to say because somebody tried to open the bathroom door. Lucky for me, I locked it.
'You're not getting yourself off, are you?'
'What the hell, Levi?' I screamed. 'Ever heard of privacy?'
'So you were really getting yourself off?' he repeated, this time I could hear him laughing.
'No idiot' I shouted, careful not to sound defensive because there's nothing to be defensive about. I'm not doing anything X-rated y'all. 'Get your head out of the gutter! Go away!' I added for good measure.
'Alright,' he finally relented. 'You better head down though. I need to talk to you about something.' I heard his retreating steps then the door closed. I waited for a minute more, just to be sure before I got out. Taking precautions, I scanned the room first to see if I was really alone. This is going to be along day.
I found him eating in the kitchen.
'Breakfast?' he asked.
'Where's everyone?' I returned.
'You're not hungry?' he tried again.
'What do you want to talk to me about?'
'It would be easier if you'd eat with me.' When he realized that I wasn't going to budge, he sighed. 'Alright, I see you're still angry at me. What about coffee then?"
'That would be nice,' I smiled.' But I'll get it myself.' We sat there, him eating his breakfast while I leisurely drink my coffee. I stared at him for a while. I never thought that Levi lost his mate and that his mate killed herself in front of him. How cruel his mate was, to kill herself in front of her mate. I decided not to dwell on the subject.
'So... what do you want to tell me?' I asked, even though I had an idea what our conversation is about.
'It's about the ball this weekend.'
'And?" I prompted.
'Well, we would like you to be a part of our pack.'
'A part of your pack? 'I echoed.
'Yes,' his tone was firm.
'Why?'
"Because... you need one.'
'I'm not a charity case Levi'
'I know that,' he said in a frustrated tone. 'Look, I am not doing this out of pity. I'm doing this because I see potential in you. Whatever the reason why you left your pack or why your previous pack dismembered you, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter because you are not the same as you were before Dawn. You are a better person now."
I gave him a humourless laugh. 'I think you meant a bitter person now.'
'Just think about it okay? You have until Sunday morning. I expect to have your answer by then.'
I had the rest of the morning to myself. No one tried to talk to me. I'm guessing Levi must have told them that I wanted time to think. Or it's probably because everyone was preparing for the ball.
According to Carly, the Crescent Ball happens once a year to commemorate the coming of age for the young pups and at the end of the ball, they go out for a run. What's bothering me right now is that I haven't shifter since I lost Emryl.
Deciding to stop brooding and make use of the spare time, I went out and started to look for someone familiar. 'Looking for someone?' Josh asked. 'Actually, yeah.' I was relieved that it was him. For a second I thought it was Edward.
'Is there something bothering you?'
'Uh,no. Actually yes, I wanted to run and I don't know if I'm allowed to do it unsupervised. Or if I'm allowed to do anything at all.'
'Alright, let me ask the Alpha.' I waited for a bit before he focused his attention on me again. 'You're free to go. Alpha says not to wander off too far. Rogues were spotted near the border earlier.'
I couldn't help but snort. 'Pfft, he says it like I'm not one.' Seeing his confused face, I changed the subject. 'So, where do you recommend a good place to run?' He pointed north. 'Thanks man.' I tapped him gratefully on the back.
I walked towards the woods, trying not to attract attention. No easy feat when Emryl is giddy, almost making me lose control.
'Stay still.' I admonish her.
'I can't, I'm too excited.'
'Just a few minutes more.' I reasoned.
But before I could enter the woods, Emryl took over and I shifted.
'Emryl, what the fuck!?' I angrily told her off.
But it didn't matter because she was wildly running throughout the woods.
'Enough, Emryl! ' I struggled to control myself. Unfortunately, she wouldn't listen. It wasn't always like this before. When I first shifted, Emryl was really patient. In fact, she was the one who was more patient between the two of us in most things. She guided me and set a slow pace as I explored the woods in my wolf form for the first time
'Emryl NO!' I tried to stop as we were nearing the border. Turns out, I didn't need to order her.
In front of us were five wolves. All were staring intently at us.
Rogues.
'I think we should head back.' I cautiously told Emryl. I stepped back but found myself staying on the same spot. I panicked. 'Emryl, no. Just no. We can't' I warned her. 'There's too many of them. We can't take them on! Please listen to me this once.'
'Well, we won't know the outcome if we won't at least try, won't we?'
Shortly after, she lunged at the rogues.
