"OK Rosie, I'll apply lotion to your backside then you do me." They had been lying on thick beach blankets on their private sun-porch. "David should be home soon and we can sun a little longer." Aednat put a generous amount of sun lotion on her companions back running a thick bead across her back, bottom and down her legs then beginning at Rosemary's neck began applying the lotion. "Get behind my ears to too and all the way to my feet."
"OK, my turn." Aednat lay on her belly as Rosemary started to apply the lotion. "I didn't know tanning was so much work."
"We're redheads so we burn easily. We'll never be truly bronze like my friend Cathy but we will have a healthy glow."
"How come David didn't take his car to go downtown?"
"The bus and streetcars are actually faster, and no parking fees."
"He left really early."
"David said I could help you pick out some clothes," Rosemary said.
"And he's getting me a ring."
"Have you thought what kind you would like?"
"Just a simple band. I want David to have one too."
David arrived home and after walking from the bus stop and bounded up the steps to their room. "I'm home!" he shouted. Not seeing Aednat, but hearing voices from the porch walked to the window and lifted the screen.
"DON'T COME OUT HERE!" Rosemary shouted.
"We're sunbathing," Aednat added.
"I've already seen you in bathing suits," David said, "And you Nit in even less."
"We're naked Davie," Aednat teased. "Rosie would rather not be seen."
"I don't get it," David said, "You're out there naked and you don't want to be seen."
"Between the Maple tree, the apple tree and the tall lilac bushes we are well screened," Rosemary said defensively. "And besides we don't want ugly tan lines."
"OK, I'll wait downstairs. We can go to Northland when you're dressed."
"Davey, Rosie tells me you used to shoot starlings from up here with your air rifle," Aednat teased.
"Yes I did. Nothing quite as tasty as fresh baked starling breast wrapped in bacon. I'll shoot a few later and bake some up."
About forty-five minutes later both girls made their way downstairs. They were wearing a tank top, shorts and flip-flops.
"We're ready!" Aednat said, then in a whisper, "I'll show you all of my tan later."
"You both look like you're dressed for the beach," David said.
"It's going to be at least ninety degrees out today," Rosemary stated.
"J.L. Hudson's is air conditioned."
"Yes, but not the walkways and gardens."
"Rosie said they have statues and ponds in some of the gardens," Aednat said happily. "And I need to buy some underwear," she added in a whisper. It took nearly an hour to travel to Whittier, then Kelly to Eight mile then across town to Northland Shopping Center.
"That's David's old school," Rosemary said pointing as they passed the school, "Notre Dame High, they have dances every Friday during the school year."
"Look, a new mall opened right next to my old high school," David said. "I remember when that was a farm."
"Yes, but I like Northland better," Rosemary said. "The old farm is still there," she then pointed.
