"MOM! Nit and I made the basketball team!" Rosemary shouted as they entered their home.
"Just keep your grades up."
"We're going to try on our basketball uniforms," Rosemary said as they dropped their coats and book bags on the floor and rushed upstairs. They were smiling when they returned to the living room in uniform.
"The shorts are much shorter then I remember from my basketball days," Ruth said.
"You played basketball Mom," Aednat asked.
"I was very good at sports, I loved going to Dominican."
"I saw your picture in the hall," Rosemary said, "You looked so young!"
"I was young," Ruth laughed, "Are you going to wear your uniforms for diner."
"Yes!" they both replied.
They were sitting at the dining room table working on their homework when David entered. "Wearing underwear at the table now," he teased.
"It's our basketball uniform," Aednat replied.
"We made the team, so did Stella, but we can deal with her," Rosemary said, then returned to her homework. "I wish algebra were as easy as French and Latin," she said wistfully. "When will I ever need algebra anyway?"
"Most likely never," David said. "When did you add Latin to your studies?" David asked.
"Just after Halloween, we dropped gym because we were doing sports."
"I took Latin too, Veni, vidi, vici! I came, I saw, I conquered, declared to the Roman senate by Julius Caesar 47 BC."
"I read about Caesar," Aednat said, "I don't like him one bit."
"Unfortunately history is filled with tyrants," David said.
"Not Avalon," Aednat said, "Davey I just remembered something. My mom is one of the three sisters, they rule Avalon."
"Anything else?"
"I'm sure more will come, I wish I could remember why I was sent away."
"Perhaps in time," David whispered as he took a seat at the table. "Your personal algebra tutor is ready to help." Rosemary smiled at him and slid closer.
"Davey took calculus at U of D."
"What's calculus?" Aednat asked.
"It was math, I took German and Theology too," David said, "I was going part time and working afternoon shift at Chrysler in Centerline."
"When did you have time for your wife?" Aednat teased.
"We had our nights," David teased back. "I like working the bakery much better."
"I'm not sure I could share you with school and work," Aednat said. "And I like working at the bakery too."
"Are you picking us up tomorrow?" Rosemary asked.
"Yes, especially now that it's cold."
"Come about an hour late, we have basketball practice."
"Did you like working at Chrysler?" Aednat asked.
"They paid really well, but it was monotonous work. I really like interacting with everyone like we do at the bakery."
"With the espresso machines we get to do that even more," Rosemary said.
