There was a nasty shock waiting for both of them when they got home. Their mother was waiting indoors for them and she didn't look very happy. "Young man you were let off school to give you time to recover. And you Sawyer were supposed to be keeping an eye on him, so before you make up another pack of lies be warned, I have been home for most of the day." Knowing how much was at stake for his brother Finn hastily said "i'm sorry mum it was my fault, I twisted his arm to come and help me. I was scared to tell you yesterday but somehow when I fell in the pond the watch that you and dad bought me for Christmas had come off. I knew it was still on my wrist when I got out of the pond because I remembered it snagging on something. When I got in the shower I realised it was missing, so I thought me and Sawyer could find it and you would never know." "I see you found it then" Karen stated coldly. "Yeah Sawyer found it caught in the rushes on the bank. It wasn't working though so we took it to that little jewelers shop on the high street. The man put a new battery in it, but he needed to keep it for a couple of hours to make sure it didn't lose or gain." Slightly mollified their mum said "i'm not happy with either of you and i'm sure your father will be having a word later. You do realise don't you that I will be checking with the jeweler and woe betide you if I find out you haven't been telling me the truth. Now get out of my sight the both of you! get cleaned up as well, you look like you've just come off of a farm!" The brothers exchanged worried glances and ran upstairs, glad to escape their mothers probing. Sawyer dragged Finn into his room and shut the door. "I'm done for Finn" he said, "as soon as she talks to that jeweler i'm dead in the water," pulling a face his brother said "nah, she won't go in there. She would never let anyone know she has doubts about our honesty, her pride wouldn't let her, trust me, we got away with it."
Barely had Biro's friends left when his mum and a couple of helpers arrived back at the farm. They all headed straight for the barn, so he went out to join them. Between the four of them they dragged three big hay bales outside so that he and his mum could tease them apart in the morning. Afterwards they all made there way indoors and his mum made dinner for all of them. "You are a good cook Mia," Rondo the older man, told his mum. After goodbyes all round the two helpers left. Immediately they were out of the building his mum locked eyes with him. "You know I love you don't you Biro?" she said, Biro felt his face going red. "I know you do mum" "so why are you playing me for a fool!" she said angrily. "Mum I don't know what you are talking about." She had tears in her eyes now and he had a sinking feeling that his whole world was about to unravel. "Because you are standing there lying to me" she yelled, "was you going to just gambol off without even so much as a goodbye!, is that how little I mean to you?" Burying his head in his arms Biro sobbed uncontrollably. Quick as a flash his mum was around the table and holding him in a tight hug. "Hush hush baby whats all this about now?, what can be so terrible that you can't tell me? I thought it was you and me against the world." Biro raised his head, tears of shame flowing down his cheeks. "I am leaving mum, you wasn't supposed to find out, I don't want to go. I will come back to see you, if you will still be able to bear me near you." Sobbing uncontrollably and getting up to leave he said brokenly "we had such a happy life."
"Stay right where you are Biro, sit down!. If I am going to lose my only son then by the harvest god you can damn well explain to me why, you have nothing to lose anyway if you are walking out on me anyway!" Miserably Biro gazed sadly at his mum, and through racking sobs he said "I~i didn't want you h~hating me, now you're making me t~tell you. "You'll wish you hadn't mum." Mia felt sick and numb, with a feeling of dread she said "tell me." Speaking in a low monotone her boy told her, "I love someone, so so much that it hurts! mum I'm so sorry hi~ oh god! his name is Sawyer." Mia slapped his face hard. "You stupid stupid boy Biro!" She wrapped herself around her sobbing son. "What kind of monster do you think I am. We are what we pop out as and I'll be damned if i'm going to lose the best reason that I have for living just because the person you have fallen for turns out to be a boy. I'm not going to insult your intelligence by asking if you're sure. I can see that you are. When were you going to leave? I say when because be sure of one thing baby you aren't now." Not really believing he was having this conversation with his mum he mumbled, "Monday, if all went well." Let me guesse , his mum interrupted, "his family don't know either, and how was you going to live? had you even thought about that." Frowning, his mum said, "I haven't seen you with any new friends, just Conner and Rae. Rae is sweet on on Billies daughter Kae, and Conner, no way, I see how you two are together." Miserably Biro told her "he's 17 mum, I met him on his Waking day, H~he's a backworlder, we was going to work out how we would manage it as we went along."
