As he was painfully dragged backward away from Biro he felt a certainty that he was dying, it was what he wanted, but was it! Biro's face was contorted in agony, and it was he, Sawyer who was putting him through this, and worse, out of cowardice. His flailing arms raked the big bamboo and he clutched at one of the canes. he doggedly hung on and all the time he could hear Biro screaming to him, "come back! come back!" Grimly he held on to the cane. he instinctively understood that if he could delay long enough this moment would pass without him being caught up in it. A great roaring noise developed in his ears and his head felt as though it was being inflated. He forced himself to open his eyes, and he was in red water, blood red water. He remembered, and now he could hear screaming, it was Biro, he focussed on his voice and made himself call out. There was a huge crash and his dad was here, holding him and lifting his hand high like the greeting that Biro always used.
Now he was swaying and being jolted, and again he felt himself being pulled away, he knew his moment had come again. You can't cheat death he fuzzily thought. Again he felt the presence of Biro and the electricity of his hand in his. Somehow passing his own energy to help him live, it was as though he was sharing his own life force with him. He mustered up every last bit of strength he had left in him and weakly squeezed Biro's hand. "Sawyer!" Biro croaked brokenly, "you scared me, I thought you were going to leave me, I couldn't let you go, why would I want to stay here without you my angel!"
A doctor came into the cubicle and noticed the oddly dressed boy holding Sawyers hand and sobbing. He took Sawyers pulse, adjusted the drips and without disturbing Biro he left. Brad and Karen came in as he did, the sight of the two of them was shocking! Karen walked over and gently placed her hand on their entwined fingers. Brad followed her over and placed his hand over hers. He met her son's worried gaze and speaking directly to Biro he said, "It looks like you and your mum are part of our family now boy. It doesn't matter what anyone else will make of this, but it will be alright now. Together we will make it work," a tearful Karen joined in, "I'm so sorry, I was blind, and Biro, I know you are responsible for saving Sawyers life. I don't understand it, but I know it. I know how much I owe you and Mia, so when Sawyer comes out of hospital we will all be there for each other. Me, Brad and our 3 sons, and I guess your mum will have to get used to having 3 sons now as well. Just for now we are all going to leave you alone because poor Finn is outside tearing his hair out."
Reluctantly Sawyer untangled his hand from Biro's and the little group left the cubicle. Finn cautiously crept in and looked in dismay at Sawyer. "Y~you aren't going to die are you, Sawyer?" Making a huge effort Sawyer beckoned him over. Finn in floods of tears cradled his brother and tenderly kissed him on his forehead. "I love you so much big bro, I should have told you a long time ago. You have to get better, cos I can't lose you, and now we are all one big family think of all the adventures we can have. And I love your boyfriend too, it's a good job I'm not gay or I would be up for stealing him from you." Sawyer felt blessed right now, life was never going to be easy but it was going to be good. He had the love of those that mattered and he had Biro, the strange miraculous boy that had just appeared in his life and rescued him. Another doctor came in and shooed Finn out, where he joined the rest of them, but he felt happy now, for the first time in a long while. He walked over to his mum and dad and hugged them tightly, and then he walked over to Mia and hugged her. Brad and Karen came over and joined in the hug. it was going to be alright now, a new and happy story was about to begin.
