The ambulance men carried the stretcher down the stairs and out into their waiting vehicle. Biro watched numbly as they located the stretcher onto some kind of wheeled trolley inside. They pushed it to the front and locked the wheels. One of the men beckoned Biro to come inside and motioned him to sit down on one of the side benches. He then moved to the opposite side and began doing things to Biro, sticking a needle into his wrist and attaching all manner of things to this. A mask was put over his mouth and nose and a big plastic box was attached by lots of sinister looking wires to his chest. The box had a lighted screen with all kinds of dancing red lines on it and an unnerving beeping noise.

Biro felt terrified and disorientated, having no idea what to expect, and not used to the speed at which this vehicle sped away at. For someone who had only stepped a few metres into the backworlders domain he now had no idea of where they were, or where they were going, and the only person he was familiar with was a deathly white unconscious boy with tubes and wires coming out of everywhere. He felt despair like he didn't know could exist and he found himself willing Sawyer to take every single breath. To complete his humiliation he felt his lower lip trembling and suddenly he couldn't stem the flow of hot tears washing down his cheeks. The medic looked at him anxiously. "Are you alright son?" Biro just nodded without taking his eyes off of Sawyer. Kindly the man said to him "hold his hand if you want to boy, there's only us in here." Gratefully Biro took hold of his cold limp hand, and without even thinking what he was doing, he bent down and tenderly kissed the back of his hand. Then in a moment of frightening clarity, he realized what he had just done. Virtually outed himself, and Sawyer, to some kind of authoritative man. In his own world, the consequences of this slip up would be dire, and there was nobody here to help him. Still clutching Sawyer's hand he made himself look this man in the eye. To his utter amazement, the man half stood and leaned across to Biro and gently ruffled his hair. "You poor son of a bitch" he muttered, "this is what this is all about isn't it, listen to me boy, and listen good," he said softly. "We are how we pop out, you're as good as anyone else, you hear! when this lad of yours is feeling better, and he will! you stand proudly with him. People will always respect real love, we cant have this happening again now can we boy."

The people of this world were a lot more enlightened than the people of his own were, he could see that now. You had a chance to be who you were here, Sawyer had been right in the first place. The ambulance swayed and stopped. The driver hopped out and opened the rear doors, then he and his mate wheeled the whole trolley thing down a ramp and out, complete with the box with the flashing lights and beeps, the bags of liquid going into his wrist and the tubes. Almost at a run, they pushed it into a building bigger than any he had seen in his world. There were people everywhere, more than he had ever seen in one place in his life. He stood, feeling lost, watching the receding trolley. Suddenly his mum arrived and caught him up in a hug. She was with Karen and her family. together they all hurried inside. A man in a white coat approached them and whisked Sawyers parents away. Finn stayed with him and his mum which he felt very grateful for. At least Finn would know what was happening in this confusing and busy environment.

Just inside the intensive care ward, a doctor was explaining to Brad and Karen, "your son is very poorly and in a critical condition," he told them. addressing Brad he said "you sir, saved his life with your quick thinking. If he had lost any more blood we would have lost him, if you had tied anything around his arm to stop the bleeding we would be amputating his arm now, and in his condition, he wouldn't have survived the surgery. I'm hopeful that he will recover, but, he isn't out of the woods yet. We need to assess him and run a few tests and then you may come and sit with him, I will call you shortly." Sure enough and ten minutes later the doctor beckoned them over, and as they sat beside him he pulled the curtains around them and left. Karen threw her arms around her husband and through wracking sobs she said "we did this to him, Brad, we were so obsessed with our perfect fucking world and our perfect fuckin family that we lost sight of what we were doing. We spouted our bigotted opinions in front of them and we made them scared of us knowing them. You do realize, don't you! our son is gay!" Brad pulled her closer to him, "Shh shh, stop that, whats done is done. We'll make it up to him love, to both of them. We will learn a hard lesson from this. Now we need to let that poor boy in here for a little while or they are going to end up admitting him as well, come on love."

They left the little cubicle and walked over to join the others. Brad went over to Biro and gently put a hand on his shoulder. He saw the guilty look in the boy's eyes and he felt ashamed of himself. "Go and sit with him son, I think that right now you are the only one who can comfort him. We will still be here when you come back out. It's going to be alright."
