Biro made his way to the pond and settled down to wait for his friend. It had become his custom, an unspoken agreement. Full of anticipation for these were anxious times now, he eagerly watched for the first sight of Sawyer. The minutes strung out and became an hour, the hour became two hours and now he knew something had to be wrong. Still, no show and the morning wore on, but here he would stay because when Sawyer did make it to here, he was going to need his friend badly.

As soon as his dad had left with Finn Sawyer grabbed up his hoodie and set off to meet Biro. He hadn't traveled very far when he heard his name being called and looked up to see Madge bearing down on him with Alfie in tow. "Hi, Sawyer, how are you love? where are you off to?" he told her he was going to the newsagents to buy comics. "Nice" Madge said, I'm going that way myself and it's a nice day, mind if we walk with you?" Inwardly cursing her he allowed her to fall into step with him. As they turned into the high street she announced, "I think I will have a sit outside Joe's cafe with Alfie and have a nice cup of tea. There is a nice view from there of the green and the pond, you are welcome to join us if you wish." Internally frantic he realized he couldn't go near the pond while nosey Madge was just across the road. Declining her offer he miserably carried on to the newsagent and taking a ridiculously long time to choose it, he bought a comic he could ill afford and headed back towards the cafe, hoping to see Madge long gone. No such luck, there they both were, large as life, so he resignedly trudged back past her, feebly waving his comic to her. How long could you make a cup of tea last? Of all the days for this coincidence to happen! and now that he was back indoors he realized that he was going to keep watch out of the window until he saw her return to her house. He and Biro are leaving to start a new life in just two days and they need to make arrangements today, about what money he can get hold of and what other stuff they will need to take with them, how much of it they can manage to carry comfortably and how they are going to spend their first night as they probably wouldn't find anywhere to stay at first.

Finally, he spotted Madge making her way home, and never had he been so pleased to see her. With a sinking heart, he watched his carefully laid plan falling apart as she didn't carry on to her home, she turned into his front garden and rang the doorbell. He reluctantly opened the door to her. "Oh, Sawyer love, I'm really sorry, I've no one else I can ask, my fault as well, I took pity on him and gave Alfie a bit of my cream scone and it seems to have upset his stomach, he keeps being sick. I've realized I forgot something and I have to pop back to the shops, it'll only take 15 minutes but I can't leave him inside like that or he'll ruin my carpet. I'll leave him tethered on his lead in the front garden, he needs to be watched to make sure it doesn't get caught around his neck or anything. I know you won't mind watching him will you, I appreciate it boy, ring me if there is a problem." It was as if the whole world was conspiring against him today to stop him getting to his boyfriend, and he knew Biro would be out of his mind with worry by now, and here was he trapped into watching a stupid dog!. Suddenly the penny dropped, Madge was going to take ages not minutes, Finn had gone to school under escort to make sure he got there and Madge had been recruited to make sure that all of his movements today were monitored. When she did return there would be another ruse just like the sick dog to keep him under her surveillance. Clearly, his only chance of getting to Biro was right now while she thought she knew where he was. Taking his chance while he had it he was out of the house and running, the opposite direction along his street, taking the long way to the pond to avoid any possibility of encountering Madge.

Gone Midday now and Biro was worried to death and anxiously watching for the arrival of his friend when suddenly the slightly wavering form of Sawyer appeared on the edge of the green running full pelt towards him. In a moment his form suddenly solidified as he sped through the joining point and threw himself at his friend knocking him right off his feet. The huge grin on Biro's face was wiped straight off when he heard Sawyers wracking sobs. "Sawyer! Angel! what is it? what's happened? tell me you must!" As best as he could his tearful boyfriend told him how he and Finn had been chaperoned all day since they each got out of bed. "She knows," he said, "they both know, it must have been Madge. She saw Finn when he covered for us and she must have told mum. I'm never gonna see you again, she'll m~move us away, I know it. I~I c~can't go back, I'll hide in the woods here." In tears now himself for his friend's anguish Biro said "hush angel, enough tears, you've got me going too. a lot has changed quickly here as well. Parents, they somehow know things. My mum knows as well, don't ask me how I haven't a clue, but she confronted me with it last night, it was awful, the thing is, and I still can't believe it, she is okay with it, more than just okay, she's going to help us."
