her pov.
"Cool," Jimin dismisses her confession as if it's a lie. "Who paid you to say this? Are there cameras around?"
Seohyung's face morphs from nervousness to confusion, her eyebrows furrowing as she tries to comprehend. "What do you mean? I'm saying the actual truth, Jimin."
"Well.. I've been fighting for you since high school, Seo. And now that I'm over you, you're coming back to me because you know I'd already moved on? You really think it's that easy?"
Before I could make a move, a sudden presence dashes right in front of my eyes and forcefully pushes me out of the way. My whole body gravitate towards the ground, leaving both of my wrist bones grazed badly and my tailbone feeling like it kissed the edges of a sharp-ended table. I wince loudly in pain and disgust, clenching my teeth in fury just by seeing X standing in front me. He isn't even at least ten centimeters far from Seohyun and Jimin, he's way too close.
"What the actual fuck, X? Don't ruin it!" I shout, pulling myself up from the concrete. I attempt to drag him away from the two of them but he won't budge a muscle. "What in the world are you doing?"
"At this point, the string will be pulled apart," he raises his hand in front of Seohyung, meaning that he's trying to control part of her conscience.
Seohyung gently lays her palms on his shoulder and in the heat of the moment moves forward to kiss him. In no time their lips collide, and Jimin reluctantly accepts the kiss.
My reflexes make me look away from the scene. It feels like I'm invading their privacy.
I pull X away with me, "Why the hell did you do that? That's not very responsible of you. If Jimin rejected the kiss it would have backfired-"
"So what? Do you know any better? He accepted the kiss. Why you would be asking me that when you're the one here who hasn't been doing almost anything since last week," X scolds me back instead. I part my lips open, thinking of any words to throw back him, but my instead my lips seal themselves shut in submission to his nagging.
A sudden feeling of discomfort rises in my chest.
Is it guilt? It's hard to figure.
I look back at the couple from a distance. Hoping to see any sort of progression that will end my mission for good, I instead witness an unexpected fallout in action.
A distressed Seohyung is now left standing in the middle of nowhere, with Jimin just walking away with an unreadable expression painted on his face.
I gently push X out of the way and jog towards the couple. I make Seohyung run after him again and she follows right away. She attempts to call out his name again but to no avail. He has no intentions of stopping his tracks at all.
But they were just kissing a moment ago, how can this all happen all of a sudden?
I pick up my feet and rush towards Seohyung's side this time instead of Jimin's. Mostly it's to compensate for the last week I spent following Jimin around. And maybe because of the awful amount of embarrassment and heartbreak Seohyung may be feeling.
A single tear trails down her left eye, which she wipes quickly to avoid being seen by anyone else. The grip on her handbag handle tightens under fingers as she quickly turns away. She picks up her phone from her jacket pocket and dials a number.
"It didn't work, Ree. I think the timing is so off this time. It's so embarrassing," Her voice cracks as she grabs any single ounce of courage left to speak. She trudges along a footpath and blends in with the crowd of other students who don't seem to mind her distressed state at all.
And I can't help but feel completely at fault for all of this happening.
My job was to put them together, not pull them apart.
Ugh, how do I even fix this?
I rush through a crowd of other students, following Seohyung's tail with full focus.
But all that shatters when a small piece of paper loosely flies from Seohyung's pocket, probably due to the mildly strong wind rustling. I bent over, stare planted on the ground just to read the writing on the paper.
The paper is crumpled and the writing is hard to read; it's as if words were etched on a rock. I grab the piece of paper before anyone else tramples it down, shoving it inside the sole pocket of my dress.
I follow Seohyung on the way home, her home this time.
