Bright colors entered my vision as it tested my sight, hearing, sense of smell, touch, and taste. As all of this happened, I got really excited, the game of my dreams is finally here!
Then a voice from above asked me, "Do you wish to start fresh or use the avatar from the past log-ins?"
Well, I thought, I will just use the old one I suppose and clicked the yes button on the pop-up menu in front of me. Then it asked me to formally log in with the user name Clara and my passcode. A white light enveloped me and took me to the town of beginnings, where everything begins in the world of Swords Online.
As I appeared outside the main square, where the other eleven thousand players stood before me, I decided to go ahead into the field to do some early hunting before it gets crowded. After fighting (and destroying) a few wild boars, I checked for the time and it was already 8:30!
"Ugh, I guess I should log out now..." I sighed, and then I swiped my right hand down to pull up the main menu and then...
"WHAT?!? Where is the log out button?" I yelled, calling the attention to me from all around.
"What do you mean?" asked one guy
"No log out?" said another man in his party
"No way..." I said, then it hit me. There is absolutely no other way out of the game, no emergency exit or alternate way to leave Martinet or SSO, and before I could explain this to the other people, I heard a distant bell ringing and was surrounded by a bright blue light.
"...A forced transport?" I mumbled, "What is going on at the main square in the town of beginnings?"
"Hey! Look up there!" A man shouted next to me.
Huh? I looked up and saw a flashing red notice that said System Announcement. What is that for? Is the game master going to make an announcement about this?
Then suddenly the whole sky was covered in Warning and System Announcement panels, and a shape formed out of the sky. It was a red robed mass with no face, but the GM has a face... Then what is this?
"Welcome to my world." He said.
"Wait... What?" said a girl next to me in a small voice.
"I am Kayaba Yuko, and from now on I am the only one in control of this world. Most of you might have already noticed that the Log-out button is gone from your menus, and I will assure you that this is not a defect but a part of what the world of Swords Online is." He explained, "Saying that, if your HP drops to zero,or if someone forcefully removes the NerveGear, the NerveGear will then fry your brain, and you and your avatar will be gone forever, in the real world and in Martinest (this world, the giant floating castle of Swords Online)."
"What is this?!?" I heard someone yell
"This is total crap... Can you even believe what he is saying?" another guy protested
"Shh... He is going to continue!" I yelled to no one
"As I was saying, the only way to escape this world of is to complete the game by destroying the final boss on floor 100." Kayaba explained
"WHAT?!? Even I didn't get remotely close to that and I was a beta-tester!" I exclaimed amongst the others shouts.
"Finally, I have included a small gift for you since you bought the game... Please check your storage now." He said
So I opened my storage and saw Mirror listed under some of my other things, so I took it out. What I saw was the avatar that took me forever to create: blonde hair, blue eyes, and some freckles near my nose, then a bright light surrounded all of the players including me, standing in the main plaza.
"Whaa...?" I said, slightly confused at what was going on.
After the light faded, I looked in the mirror once more, and the look surprised me.
"It's... It's... Me." I stammered, the brown haired, brown eyed person from reality stared me in the face. Also when I looked around, I immediately notices the female population reduced a little in the area...
"But why would he even do this?" whispered a girl near me, she looked familiar...
Then Kayaba Yuko continued, tearing me out of my daze, "You may be wondering why, why would Kayaba Yuko, deveoper of SSO, do this? The answer is actually quite simple, I wanted to create and intervene in a world that I created myself, and since I have achieved that goal I will leave you at this.
This marks the end of the tutorial and the beginning of your new reality in Martinest." He concluded.
Then the sky turned back to normal, and an eerie quiet surrounded the players in the square.
"The calm before the storm." I muttered under my breath
"Wait... Is that you Clair?" Someone next to me whispered
I whirled around only to see my best friend Amanda standing right next to me, "Amanda? You're here too?!?" I exclaimed, "What are you doing here?".
"Well, I bought the game a few weeks ago when it first came out in the mall, but what are you doing here?" She whispered,"Also, we should probably be going, 'cuz it is going to get pretty crazy in here in a few minutes."
"Ok, there is a town nearby, even though I am only level 1 we can get there safely." I explained as we exited the square together.
"Well, lets go I guess..." She said, and as we walked away you could almost hear the chaos starting in the square.
