"Lily, I honestly don't know why you're friends with him," said Marlene as she and Lily walked away from Severus, "he's vile to everyone!"

"He doesn't mean it," Lily immediately jumped to her friend's defence, like she always did when Marlene bought up the topic of Snape.

"Yeah, try saying that after he's called your family blood traitors for the fiftieth time," Marlene scoffed.

"He doesn't mean it," Lily repeated.

"You can't make excuses for him forever Lil," Marlene shook her head.

"What are you doing Marlene-Marlene McKinnon," Sirius peered over Marlene's shoulder at the letter she was writing to her parents.

"That's none of your business," Marlene said sharply, quickly rolling the parchment up, to keep it away from Sirius's prying eyes. "Actually I've been meaning to speak to you."

"What's this?" Sirius said down in the seat opposite Marlene, "Marlene McKinnon speaking to me by choice."

"Don't make me regret my decision," Marlene told him, "anyway, do you know what is up with Remus."

Sirius's face darkened slightly. Clearly he had also noticed the cuts and bruises that Remus seemed to keep accruing.

"No," Sirius's voice was different to the carefree tone that he normally spoke in. "He won't say anything."

"I think he's being bullied," Marlene confessed in a hushed tone, "I mean, he won't talk about it and he keeps getting injured, I can't think of any other explanation."

"He keeps telling us that his mother is sick," said Sirius, "I'm not really sure what to think."

"Don't touch me you filthy Mudblood," Avery jeered. Lily had tripped and fallen into him.

"Shut up Avery," Marlene glared at the Slytherin boy, helping her friend to her feet.

"The little blood traitor wants to defend her Mudblood friend?" Avery said to his group of Slytherin friends.

"I know!" Marlene gasped, "is such a shocker isn't it."

"Shut up blood traitor," another Slytherin snapped at her.

"I'd rather be a blood traitor than a fanatic," Marlene told them, "c'mon Lily, these idiots are not worth our time." She grabbed Lily's arm and the two girls hurried away, being Catcalled by the Slytherins as they did.

"That lot are just vile!" Lily complained.

"They're all little Death Eaters in the making, that's what my dad says," Marlene said, "I bet that none of them can wait to go off and join up with Voldemort."

"I can't believe how fast our first year has gone by!" Marlene had her face pressed up against the carriage window as it trundled towards Hogsmead station, taking them to the train. She was trying to commit the sight of the castle on the horizon to memory, so that she had no excuse to forget what it looked like over the summer holidays.

"I know, it feels like just yesterday that we arrived!" Lily was also watching the castle.

"You're still coming over for the last week of the holidays right?" Marlene asked Lily.

"Yes of course I am," laughed the red head, "and you've asked me about that everyday for the past few weeks."

"So you haven't got an excuse to forget about it then!" Marlene grinned.
