"Come on then Lenie, let's go," Sirius was waiting for Marlene in the common room on the day of the Hogsmead trip.

"I swear, if you call me Lenie one more time, then I'm turning around and going right back up those stairs," Marlene stopped on the bottom step and glared at him.

"Okay! Okay! C'mon then Miss McKinnon," Sirius said mockingly, offering her his arm in a gentlemanly fashion.

Marlene rolled her eyes, but took his arm anyway, and allowed him to lead her out of the common room.

"So what are we going to be doing on this date?" Marlene asked in a conversational tone, trying to break the strange silence that had fallen upon them since they left Gryffindor tower. It was very strange for the two to be in each other's company without one of them talking the other's ear off.

"Uh, was I meant to plan something?" Asked Sirius.

"Honestly, you force a girl to go on a date with you, and you don't even bother to plan anything."

"Relax Marlene, I planned something."

Marlene let out a sigh, "I will let it be known now, I will not be going inside Zonkos."

"Well, you can wait outside then," Sirius grinned. Marlene just shook her head in an exasperated fashion, that she normally adopted in Sirius's company.

They continued through the castle and down the long drive to Hogsmead, discussing the topic of James's hopeless crush on Lily.

"Honestly, it's never going to happen," said Marlene with a laugh.

"That's what Remus said about me getting you to go on a date with me." Sirius said smugly, "but look where we are now."

"Technically I never agreed to this, I had to come."

"You didn't have to," Sirius chortled, "I never said that it was a binding contract."

"So I can leave then?" Marlene asked, "I mean I won't, but it's nice to know I can."

"Yes you can leave."

"Interesting."

In spite of herself, Marlene found herself having a very nice time with Sirius. When they returned to Hogwarts for dinner, Marlene found herself wondering if they would be able to do it again on another occasion.

"You look strangely happy," said Lily when Marlene sat down across from her at the Gryffindor table.

"Do I?" Marlene asked.

"So I'm taking your massive grin to say that you had a good time with Sirius then?"

"You know what? I actually did," Marlene laughed, "is that crazy."

"Yes," said Lily, with a blank expression, "yes it is crazy, but I can see why. You and Sirius would work quite well together."

"What?" Marlene asked, "I don't-"

"-as a couple, you would work well as a couple. I mean, you're both very good in lessons, you have the same evil sense of humour and you share the explicit hatred of Severus."

Marlene frowned, wondering what Snape had said to Lily that had caused her to say this, "what happened?" Marlene said.

"Ask your boyfriend," sniffed Lily, gathering her things up and storming out of the room.
