"I can't believe I'm stuck in a house with Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum here!" Marlene complained to Lily who was sat beside her. The two girls were watching Sirius, who was stuffing carrots into his mouth as James counted the carrots.
"Well, on the bright side, we don't have to talk to them," shrugged Lily.
"At least one of us is sane," Marlene piled more food onto her plate.
The new Gryffindors had all excitedly dug into their food, but none with quite so much gutser as a plump, smiley boy who was sat across from Marlene, who had excitedly introduced himself as Peter Pettigrew.
Lily kept shooting glances over to the Slytherin table where a rather grumpy looking Severus Snape was seated, looking longingly over at Lily.
"So how long have you know him?" Marlene nodded in the boy's general direction.
"A while," Lily blushed and looked at her plate, "he lives in my village, he's the one who told me about wizards."
"So you're a muggleborn then?" Marlene asked in an interested voice.
"Yeah, are you?"
"No, my parents are wizards," Marlene said, "neither of them ever shut up about this place," she glanced around the hall.
"That must be amazing," Lily smiled absent mindedly, "you must know all sorts of spells already!"
"Not really, we all start the same," Marlene assured her.

"Gryffindor first years this way!" An older student who Marlene assumed was a prefect, based off of his badge with a large P on it.
Marlene and the other first years all scrambled to their feet to follow the taller boy. There were around twenty-five new Gryffindors, in equal numbers of boys and girls. Marlene vaigly wondered if she would be placed in a dormitory with her new friend Lily.
But she didn't have much time to dwell on this as they left the Great Hall and made their way through the castle.
It was just as wonderful as her parents had described. She looked at every painting that they passed, and laughed at the slightly bewildered expression on Lily's face when one painting demanded what she was looking at.
"This is the entrance to the Gryffindor common room," the prefect said eventually when they reached a painting of a woman in a salmon coloured dress.
"Password?" The painting asked.
"Mandrake," said the prefect. The painting swung forwards and they all began to climb through the hole that was now visible.
"Merlin, I'm going to forget that password," Marlene murmured to Lily, who giggled.
"Girls dormitories are up the stairs on my left, boys the same in my right. Your trunks will already be in your assigned dormitories." The prefect told them. The girls and boys split up. Marlene was glad to be rid of James Potter and Sirius Black's obnoxious laughter that had barley stopped since they left the Great Hall.
Marlene and Lily were the last to ascend the stairs to the girls dorms.
There two rooms for the Gryffindor girls first years, Marlene spotted her name on the second door, along with Lily's.
"We're in here," Marlene grabbed Lily's arm and pulled the girl inside. The other three inhabitants were already there, unpacking their trunks excitedly.
"I really should write a letter to mum and dad, but I just want to sleep," yawned Lily.
"I feel the same," Marlene nodded, she located her bed easily and tumbled into her bed, falling asleep almost immediately.
