"I've been telling you for years Lil, he's vile!" Marlene said as Lily sat back down huffily beside the lake, her back firmly to where the boys continued to torment Snape.
Lily said nothing she just crossed her arms tightly and pursed her lips.
Marlene sighed and put her arm around Lily. "I know he's your friend, but really, he's not a nice person! You'll be better off without him."
"I know," said Lily quietly, "I just- I mean I wanted to see the best- to believe that he wasn't lying to me."
Marlene understood what Lily was saying. Whenever Marlene overheard Snape talking to Lily, when he thought they were alone, he had a certain tenderness in his voice, and he would never dare to say anything like what he had just said to Lily.
But like Marlene had been saying for years, Snape wasn't worth all of the effort that Lily had been putting into defending him.

"Is Lily okay?" Sirius asked Marlene after their Defence Against The Dark Arts practical exam that afternoon.
"I thinks she'll be fine," Marlene shrugged helplessly. "I'm not even going to ask you how that exam went, because I know you will have done amazingly."
Sirius laughed, "it went fine thankyou. Fancy a walk in the grounds?"
"Why not, I need to clear my head," Marlene took the arm that he offered her and they strode out into the grounds. It was deserted outside, as everyone else was in classes, and most of the fifth years headed straight back to their dorms after the exams.
"I'll be glad when these exams are over," said Marlene, looking across the lake, "just think. Tomorrow we'll be free."
"I don't know why everyone had been worrying about these exams so much," Sirius mused, "there really is no point."
"Not everyone can get eleven Os without any study," laughed Marlene.
Sirius simply shrugged, and they continued walking in a comfortable silence. Eventually they found themselves sat down beside the lake, looking out across the dark surface and watching the light reflect off of it.
"It's so beautiful here," Marlene grinned, looking out at the surrounding mountains.
"Not as beautiful as the company," Sirius said. Marlene turned to him and saw that he was grinning stupidly.
She laughed, "you've got some nerve Black."
"I pride myself on my nerve," he grinned. And before Marlene knew it he had pulled her into a kiss. And then she surprised herself, and she kissed back.
It was a long time before they broke apart, both with massive grins on their faces.
"You've really got some nerve!" Marlene laughed, her eyes were fixed on Sirius' and their bodies were pressed close together.
Sirius said nothing, but quickly pulled her into another kiss.
