"are you ready?" rafael asks me as i wait in his office.
we were thirty minutes from putting me on the stand.
"yeah, i'm good to go."
he pulls out a bottle of scotch from his drawer and holds it up. "if all goes well, by the end of trial we'll be drinking this to celebrate."
"don't jinx it rafa."
"can't jinx something you know you're gonna win." he says as he tucked the scotch back in his drawer. "the evidence has been against him since the first time he hurt you, even more so now."
"i know."
"just glad to see you alive and thriving." he says. "seeing you in the hospital bed after it all was upsetting."
"the good news is we finally caught him." i give him a small smile.
"just so you know, i can't bring up the shooting."
"how come?"
"judge ruled it was more prejudicial. plus, we haven't no surveillance, no weapon, no fingerprints."
"right." i sigh. "well, we don't need it right?"
"we don't. but, we'll be able to expand on it if he brings it up during the trial."
i nod.
"how'd my brothers do on the stand?"
"good." he says. "carisi really stuck the nail in the coffin though."
i smile. "that's my partner."
"they're going to ask you about you and carisi's personal relationship or speculate if you have one."
"how come?"
"defense brought up that you two are currently living together."
"i'm only staying at his place until i find a place of my own." i say. "we're friends and we are partners."
"even though you guys woke up in the same bed a couple of weeks ago?"
