Buzzing thoughts. They filled your head. Busy thoughts. Scary thoughts.
You stared at the porthole in the wall. The only source of light was the moonlight from that porthole. Enough light streamed through so you could see the entire room. The woven chair at the foot of your bed. The dresser against the wall. You questioned who used to sleep in this room.
Can he really protect me? The shaking thoughts came back. Does he know who he is up against? He might underestimate their abilities. They'll come back and... You weren't quite sure what would happen if they found out about your telling Leo. But Leo promised no one would know.
A soft knocking caused you to jump. Imagining a Leo Valdez with questions knocking at the door, you rolled out of bed.
Hurrying to the door, you ran your fingers through your hair in a last-minute effort to not look ratchet. Glancing at your reflection in the dresser's mirror, you decided you looked okay enough. You opened the door. There was not a Leo Valdez.
The visitor stood in the shadows of the hallway. From what you could see, he wore a black turtleneck and sweatpants as if he just finished robbing a bank. His dark, sleep hair was held in a low ponytail and reached down to his hips.
Before you could protest, he silenced you by placing a gloved finger to his lips. He pressed his other palm against the door, allowing himself in. His dominance flustered you.
How can he just--What right does he--Who does he think--How dare he--? You had no idea where to start. All you knew was that he intruded in on your personal space and you were reading to squeeze him through the porthole.
As your thoughts buzzed, not knowing where to begin, you backed into a dresser. You watched him in helpless horror as he eased the door closed. Once the door clicked in place, you felt like an animal in a cage.
He observed you like an old family member admiring how fast you grew. Except, his expression had no admiration within it. "Three rules..." He shook his head in disapproval.
"P-pardon?" you asked. You didn't think he had a right to be mad at you since he was the one breaking into people's rooms.
"Three rules," he repeated, this time more forceful. "You had one job..."
Hunter, you realized. But, Leo promised...it can't be.
Hunter rose a questioning eyebrow. "No response? You had no problem talking to Leo."
You gasped, gripping the edges of the dresser to keep your hands from shaking.
"At least you responded. I was beginning to think you couldn't hear me." Hunter stepped into the moonlight. His face had the color of desert sand and the texture of smooth clay. He took small steps toward you. His moist eyelashes brought out his reddened eyes. As he blinked, a tear fell from an eye.
Uncomfortable with his approach, your grip on the dresser tightened even more. "What--why are you..." you stuttered.
"Three rules," he breathed as he moved into arm range. "(Y/N), you only had three rules."
"Get--take a step back," you demanded.
"You were told to only believe me. I am the only one you can believe," he croaked. He cleared his throat as he stepped into elbow range. "Why--" he dropped his head and wiped his eyes. "Why aren't I good enough? Why did you trust Leo more than me?"
"No. You don't get to turn this around me," you protested.
He lifted his head. His cheeks had tear streaks. "Why do you love Leo more than me? Why don't you love me?"
You glanced at the door, wondering when Leo would come in.
"Look at me," Hunter demanded, grabbing your shoulders and putting his face in front of yours. You tensed in his grip and stared at him in shock. "Why don't you answer me?" his voice cracked.
"I'm mildly concerned," you said.
"Please..." he begged. "I can take the truth." He released your shoulders and took a step back.
"I'm sure you are an awesome person, but you asked me why I don't love you? Sir, I don't even know your last name. I just met you," you told him.
He nodded, seemingly okay with the answer even though his eyes remained red and his cheeks remained tear-streaked. "It's okay. The pain won't last long."
"What do you mean?"
Hunter shrugged as he answered. "It's over. The mission is over. Everything to do with the mission is over. I must destroy all the evidence as one last tribute to Leader."
You squinted at him as he began toward the door. "Where are you going?"
"I just thought it would be best if our remains were not together," he shrugged as he opened the door and walked into the hallway.
Before you could question him, there was a massive white light that filled your vision. Everything became unbearably hot, then nothing at all.
GAME OVER: MISSION FAILED. SHIP BOMBED.
Chapter 23: Go back to where you messed up. Don't tell Leo the truth. Hunter is listening.
