-He was considered a very smart person.
He knew better than to get attached to her breathtaking smile and empathetic heart because it was bound to hurt him one day; he knew better than to let her soft, angelic voice lure him in during their endless phone calls because it would one day overtake his mind and distract him from his missions; he knew better than to drown in her beautiful, [E/C] eyes because they would eventually pull him too far under, hypnotizing and killing him and his thoughts with only a simple gaze.
So why did he do it anyway? If he was so smart, then why was he so dumb?
He didn't have any real friends, family, or anything; he was okay with that. Cutting all ties was required of him to become a secret agent. Sure, it was lonely at times, but the risk of having someone close to him was far too dangerous; so then why did he allow himself to get close enough to fall in love with her? He knew the risks, yet he still fell for her kind smile and good heart.
But, she loved every person except for him, it seemed. He admitted that it hurt quite a bit. The one he thought so highly of didn't spare him a second glance, whereas she was the only one his eyes ever lingered upon-ever, in his life. He wasn't what you would call... experienced in that department.
So, he pushed the feelings for her away far into the back of his mind and continued on with his life; it was difficult, but he managed. He has avoided love thus far with relative ease, so it shouldn't be this hard, right?
It wasn't, if he was being honest. Avoiding her was easy. But that's because he was an expert at avoiding things.
That is, until she was in danger.
"Where is she?" he asked with concern evident in his tone as his partner dropped the phone in utter shock once they had received the news. His fellow agent's silence only made him angrier. "Where the hell is she?"
After a short moment of hesitation, he replied in a small voice, "They have her." The quiet worry was almost uncharacteristic for his partner.
He froze. All of the air suddenly left his lungs, and he struggled to breathe once his worst nightmare came to life. "No. No. How could they have found out about her?"
"I don't... I don't know." It wasn't supposed to be like this. He purposefully distanced himself so that this wouldn't happen, yet it did anyway. Without a second thought, he roughly shoved the chair to the side and punched the table, far too angry with not only his enemy, but also himself for being so stupid. How could he let this happen?
He should've been there with her, protecting her, but he was so scared of his growing feelings that he ran away from them altogether-ran away from her. Damn it.
"I'm getting her," he said, and there was absolutely no changing his mind. The man next to him, quite possibly the only person in the world that has truly been by his side, gave him a look full of worry.
"You could die."
"Better me than her."
He didn't know how to respond to that. An agent was always ready to put their life on the line, but was that the right thing to do right now? She was probably already dead.
