We are- Daya
"He's dead!" I scream hitting my steering wheel with my fist. "He is so fucking dead! I'm going to kill him. I'm going to kill him and bury his body in the backyard and no one will ever find him because I have my ways!" I speed down a back road looking at the time. I still have fifty minutes to go. "You've got to be kidding me!" I speed up going eighty in a forty-five as I run my hand through my hair. Now would not be a time to get pulled over. I swear that cop would die too.
Ahead of me I see something. Over a hill, dark smoke was flying up into the sky. Oh no. Oh, God please no. I drive up the hill, slowing down as I reach the top and see the cause of the smoke. A motorcycle was on its side with a man under it and in front of him was a doe. I pull to a stop, frozen in shock as I watch the man struggling to get free. I look around him seeing gasoline leaking and one of his wheels was on fire. Oh God. I look back to the gasoline leaking before jumping out of my car and running to him.
"No, no." He says pushing me away. "You have to get away from here."
"Stop being impractical." I say annoyed grabbing the handles of his bike and grunting as I pull it off him. He immediately scoots away from it and I drop the bike grabbing him and running back to my car as it spontaneously explodes and he drops to the ground pulling me with him.
"Are you okay?" He asks me as he pushes himself up.
"I should be asking you that." I say pushing myself into a sitting position. He stands, not putting any pressure on the leg that was caught under his bike and I quickly stand up looking him up and down.
"You saved my life." He says but I ignore him and study his leg.
"How's your leg?" He looks down at it and gently twists it side to side.
"I'll manage." He says before looking to me and shaking his head.
"I don't know what happened." He says. "That deer came from out of nowhere. The road was clear and then it just-"
"Yeah." I say. "I know how that can be." He takes a deep breath and leans against my car. "I think you need to go to a hospital." He shakes his head.
"I'll be fine." He says. "I just need to hit my buddy up. Can I use your phone?" I nod pulling it out and handing it over to him as he walks away and I lean against my car waiting for him to get done. I look back to his destroyed bike. That could have been Dave, or- or me. I shake my head and let out a breath as the man heads back to me.
"He's lucky I was here." I mutter under my breath.
"Okay, I'll be here waiting." He says. "Obviously. See you in a few." He hangs up and hands me back my phone.
"Your friend on his way?" I ask and the man nods.
"I want to thank you again." He says. "I don't know how I can repay you." I wave my hand looking away.
"Don't worry about it." I say. "You being okay is all that matters."
"Thanks, but I'm lucky you're okay too." He says.
"I don't matter."
"My parents would beg to differ." He says and I look at him. "You saved my life. I owe you one."
"Let's hope you never get to pay me back." I say holding out my hand.
"I'm Nick." He says. "And one can only hope." I sigh.
