Jessie scanned her report card seeing all A’s and a small but apparent B. She groaned and mentally slapped herself, “Not good enough! You have to do better!” She glanced over at Jack’s report card beside her desk and saw D’s and C’s. She rolled her eyes and sighed, “You’re never going to step up your effort, huh Jackie?”
Jack was leaned back in his chair shrugging lightly and he closed his eyes, “I really don’t care. It’s not as if Dad will ever tell me different. Grade’s doesn’t matter to be an alpha… and don’t call me Jackie!”
Of course, she thought bitterly. Dad never scolds him… He’s the apparent prodigy child. If only she had gotten that one last A then she could have gotten a small compliment from her father. Maybe a good pat on the back, something that tells her that he at least notices her.
She gave a forced smile and patted her brother on the back, pushing his chair forward till it sat on all fours again, “That’s dangerous, big brother.”
He scowled and stuck out his tongue, “Bite me.” They both paused and burst out in laughter.
The bell suddenly rang and she jumped, her thoughts becoming jumbled again.
Jack looked up at the clock and pushed his chair back to stand up, "I have to go to practice. I'll see you at home." He picked up his bag from the floor and shoved his report card into a random pocket before leaving the room with Jessie to sit there, envious of him.
Everyone had left the room before she had even slung her bag over her shoulder. She stared down at her report card and clutched the strap of her bag tightly. "Not good enough," She muttered. She folded it and shoved it into her pocket as she exited the room.
The hallways were inhabited with loitering students, some flirting and others just lazy and didn’t want to go out and stand in the hot sun. She rolled her eyes as she passed a couple that were lip locked in passion. No one even bothered to tear them apart and she was too much in a rush to care.
She burst through the doors and groaned as she smelt nothing but sweat and hormones everywhere. She pinched her nose and muttered nasally, "Almost as bad as P.E." It was only worse since both sexes were mixed together.
"Well if it ain’t the blood hound herself." She jerked her head to the right to see Margaret with a big silly grin spread across her lips. She walked swiftly over to Jessie and punched her arm playfully, "Oh come on! It's not that bad after you get used to it."
Jessie lowered her hand from her nose and inhaled again. Her nose eventually got past the sweat and stenches and focused on the freshly cut grass from the day before. She gave a soft sigh and shook her head, rubbing her temple, "I know that. Shut up and let's just go."
"Aww! Why are you so grumpy?" Her friend puckered out her lip and gave a fake saddened look.
Jessie didn't bother to say anything as she dug into her pocket and shoved her report card at Margaret. Margaret scoffed and jerked it from her. Her eyes scanned over it and she looked up, "And?.. Your point is?"
"Maggie! I got a B in science! This is the second time this year!"
Margaret sighed, "I know, I know. Geez, you always act like it's a bad thing... I mean, I got a C in Science and you don't see me crying. Who cares if your dad doesn't pay as much attention to you as Jack? Frankly, I wish I was in your shoes. Besides, nobody loves a perfect person."
Jessie glared at her and Margaret realized her mistake. She swallowed hard and shoved the paper into Jessie's hands before turning away and walking toward her buss. Jessie watched her best friend walk away from her and she sighed, shaking her head.
"What is wrong with me?.."
"I don't know... What is wrong with you?" The hairs on the back of Jessie’s neck stood up in alert and goosebumps shivered up her skin. The warm and inviting voice behind her ear wrapped around Jessie and made her wolf senses purr in excitement. But another part of her was screaming danger.
