David stared out the window numbly and barely listened to what his friends had to say.

Greg glanced back from the front of the car when he noticed David wasn't replying to his questions or comments.

"I don't know what's with your sudden funk, but you have got to snap out of it, bro. This isn't like you. You're supposed to be David the... The..." Greg looked in the mirror in the back at his little brother Tom for assistance with the words that he couldn't make.

Tom stuttered slightly, "David the... Great?"

"Yeah! David the great! How cool is that? Isn't it just cool enough to take it up again?.. Maybe go to a party and trash the place up a bit? Screw a girl in the dark? Come on, Dave. You've got to get out onto the battlefield again!"

David turned to look at Tom with a raised eyebrow, ignoring Greg, "What am I? An old ass warrior?"

Greg chuckled, "It would honestly seem so. It's more like a wounded warrior that hasn’t bathed in a while, if I might add." David scowled at him and Greg continued, "Point is, you need to step up your game again. There's a party tonight and I'm sure if you tried, girls will be all over you once more."

David grinned, his spirits lifting slightly, "Yeah... They would wouldn't they?" He frowned and leaned back against his seat, scowling out the window. He couldn't linger on the thought without another one passing of Jessie.

"You know it! So you're in?"

"Yeah. I'm in."

"Alright!" Tom patted his shoulder.

"Good. If you want we can go pick up some fast food before heading over there. It’s almost nine so it should be starting up already."

"Sure. Something Mexican though."

Tom and Greg chimed in together, "Taco Bell."

Tom and Greg chatted together as David looked out the window again. All spirit had left him again. I wonder if she's happy, he thought to himself. Is she out celebrating like I am? Or is she just as miserable as I am?

Jessie cried softly and quietly. She couldn't imagine how long she had been on David's porch, waiting for him. Cars passed quickly and she hoped that one would be her mate's.

She let her mind imagine impossible thoughts of fantasy scenarios. Ones where they were both wolves and they would run through the forest, playing together. Others where they were humans and married. They lived in a white house with a spotless white picket fence. A small boy ran around in a green and freshly cut yard. He giggled as David picked him up and laughed as he spun him around. Jessie stood on the porch with a protruding belly. This was what she wanted now. A big happy family. A family with David.

She began to murmur to herself between quiet sobs, "M-maybe... Maybe he'll forgive me... Maybe... Th-that can come true... We can have a kid... Named Dave... J-just like him... Maybe more than one..." She gave a shaky laugh, "A-and he can... Love me... Maybe..."

Her sobs became quick and hysterical; feeling like it was a panic attack. She shook her head with angry loud sobs, "No! No he won’t!.. I'm horrible... I'm such a bitch... M-maybe I should... Just die... Yeah... Die... A-and then... He can find someone else that would make him happy... Yeah... Someone more special..."

Her hands shook as she held her head, "No!.. No! Only I can have him!.. I screwed it up! Oh... What have I done?!"

Susan groaned softly as she pulled into her driveway after a long night of work. Her co-workers seemed to give her more of a hard time than usual. Must have been their times of the month, she thought bitterly. She turned off her car and exited, locking it.

"David?"

Susan stopped when she heard sobbing. Her eyes darted to the porch, seeing a figure curled up on her porch. She walked cautiously to the porch, looking at the figure, "Who are you?"

Jessie whimpered, "David... Where's David?"

Susan recognized the voice and she ran to Jessie's side, "Jessie! What happened? What's wrong?" She gently helped Jessie up and Jessie whimpered.

"I-I have to talk to David. I-I really... Need to see him. Where is he?"

Susan bit her lip, "I don't know. He's normally home by now if he really isn't here. Are you sure he isn't here?" She took on the thought that maybe her son was ignoring Jessie. She had a few ideas of why but she didn't want to bring them up right then to Jessie.

Jessie shook her head, "I've been here since school ended... H-he hasn't come... I thought... Maybe he was you... but... It’s only you." She gave a laugh, "It’s only you! It proves it!.. I... We just... Weren't meant to be..."

Susan's eyes widened, "What are you talking about, Jessie?.. Are you two mates?"

Jessie smiled bitterly, "We were supposed to be. I don't know anymore... I screwed it up... Real bad... Now he won't even speak to me. I can't ever find him... And... I just want to die."

"Sweetie..." Susan drew Jessie into a tight hug, "I'm sure it isn't completely your fault... Everything will work out. He'll come home. You can wait here if you want, but I'm positive everything will work out." Susan pulled back to look at Jessie, waiting patiently for a response.

Jessie looked past Susan and slowly nodded. Susan let her go for a moment to unlock her door and she led her inside after turning on lights. She made Jessie sit on the couch and looked at Jessie a moment. Jessie looked so small on the couch. She was much skinnier than normal. Dark circles were heavy under her eyes and her hair was ragged and unkempt. She was, in Susan's eyes, like a sane person turned mad.

She knew how she must have felt. Not being with your mate for such a long period of time. She knew too well how that felt.

She turned and went into the kitchen, gathering food on a tray for Jessie to eat.

"Jessie..." She walked back into the living room and set the tray on the long and low table in front of her. She sat beside Jessie and ran a hand over her hair, "I made you food... Come on. Please eat. Even I can tell that you're starving yourself.

Jessie looked at the tray and reached forward with a shaky hand. She retrieved an apple and slowly ate it.

Susan gave a small smile, "There... Now it won’t be long till David comes."
