Samantha's POV
My breathing quickened and I ran though the hallways of the hospital towards Liam's room knowing exactly where it was. My body stopped in its tracts once I had reached the ever so familiar door of Liam's hospital room. I placed my hand on the door knob and slowly twisted it, not sure what I was about to see but there was only one way to find out.
The door creaked open and everything in the room was just as I left it the day before only this time, the bed was propped up and Liam was upright with his eyes still closed. My second observation was that Liam's breathing tube was removed but he was still connected to an oxygen machine that was placed right under his nose. My first thought was that he had slipped back into his coma and that I hadn't arrived in time to see him. I inched closer to his bed and place my hand on the bed rail.
"Liam?" I spoke softly. At this point his eyes remained closed but the tops of his eyelids fluttered every so slightly. It was almost like he was trying to look around without even opening his eyes.
"Liam it's me, Samantha. Niall's here with me too."
I lowered myself onto the chair that was provided in the room and Niall stood beside me and placed his hand on my shoulder looking just as concerned as I did. In my head I prayed he would wake up or make any indication that he knew we were here. Today marked exactly a month since he was admitted and I didn't know how much more I could take of seeing him like this.
"If you can hear us, squeeze my hand." I slipped my hand into his and waited for any type of movement but I almost broke down completely when I felt nothing at all. I had gotten my hopes up when the doctor phoned to tell us he was awake. My heartbreak was to the point that I questioned if he would ever wake up.
But that's when I heard it. I still had yet to feel any movement from Liam's hand but out of his mouth came a small grunt that made it sound like he was trying to speak. Ever so slightly the slits in his eyes widened but only about a quarter of an inch and after a few blinks, they had opened completely. He began to squint, shielding his eyes from the bright light which was a drastic change from the amount of time they had remained closed.
He began to start coughing and the facial expression on his face made it seem like he was in pain. Niall quickly ran out to flag down a doctor because we weren't entirely sure what was going on. Shortly after, the same doctor that we had been dealing with since Liam was admitted, walked into the room but to our surprise he didn't look too concerned. Liam's coughing continued as the doctor raised the head of his bed more so that he was almost sitting completely upright. He handed Liam a cup of water but Liam made no effort to take the glass.
I looked at the doctor's face and I could instantly tell he knew something wasn't right- almost like he wasn't expecting it. He placed the cup up to Liam's mouth and held it there to let him take a drink. Soon after his coughing subsided and he placed the now empty glass of water on his bedside table. He reached down and placed two fingers into Liam's hand and asked him to sneeze them. I couldn't see the movement in his hand but that wasn't to say the doctor didn't feel anything.
He then walked to the end of Liam's bed and lifted up his blanket to reveal Liam's leg from the knee down and his feet. He took his pen out of his scrub pocked and directed his attention to Liam whose eyes were still open but he had yet to speak any words.
"Alright Liam, now I'm just going to test the reflexes in your feet." He took the end of his pen and ran it along the bottom part of his foot. I wasn't completely sure what we were supposed to be looking for put when he clicked his pen and put it back into his pocket, the look on his face was hard to read and it began to concern me. He then turned around to Niall and I.
