Looking out of the car window, I can see the trees flashing by. Occasionally the sun coming through them leaves me blinded for a second. The road is deserted on this sunny day. I mindlessly play with the daylightring around my finger, feeling a soft burn every time I take it off a bit too far. We’ve been driving for hours on an end, not having to stop to get food or for bathroom breaks. Kol still doesn’t want to tell me where we’re going. He only keeps telling me it’s a surprise and that I should just wait. But I’m not a very patient person.
Kol and I’ve been dating for about a year now, having had a little brake at four months when he dropped the vampire bomb on me. His Original status scared me the most when I had learned about the supernatural world. He came back when I had been at the wrong place at the wrong time, he saved me, changed me into one of his kind. He helped me through my transitioning process, told me not to worry about his family, that he didn’t speak to them. He told me everything about his past, about his family and about the supernatural world.
Yesterday he told me to pack my bags, that we were going on a little trip. We’ve been in the car for 14 hours now, crossed state borders and stopped once for a snack when we saw a couple with car trouble. I take out my phone again, checking the reception before opening my navigation app.
‘’Could you stop checking the road numbers to see where we are. We’ll get there love, we’re already half way.’’
I look up from my phone having seen that we are still driving on the same highway since we’ve left Los Angeles behind us. Kol has his signature grin plastered on his face, his eyes are already focused back on the road.
“I don’t like surprises, and you damn well know that.’’
‘’Of course I know Y/N. But I do like to surprise you, and you know I always get what I want.’’ He laughs and places his hand on my thigh, softly rubbing up and down my upper leg.
I’ve been continuingly asking Kol where we’re going, hoping he’ll tell me when he gets annoyed with me. After six more hours he finally cracks.
‘’Okay, please stop. We’re going to New Orleans.’’
‘’New Orleans?’’ I can’t stop my jaw from dropping a little bit. ‘’What are we going to do in New Orleans?’’ No wonder this car ride takes so long, we’re going to the other side of the United States.
‘’Family business. And it’s a beautiful city, you’d like it.’’
Family business? He always painted his family to be some sort of crazy, relentless, killing machines without any regard to other people’s feelings. And now he wants to visit them, in New Orleans? There isn’t a city with higher supernatural crime rates than New Orleans, and the Original family are accounted for most of those crimes. The poor boy must have lost his mind.
‘’You’re not speaking.” His voice is soft, almost careful.
‘’I’m, ehm, surprised.’’ I’m looking right at him, but his gaze is focused at the road. More cars have appeared during the day and he needs to keep his attention on the road.
‘’Well, I guess my surprised worked.’’
It definitely worked. I’m very surprised, it’s something I had never expected. I thought he escaped his family for the sake of staying alive. I mean, his own brother killed him.
“I thought you never wanted to see them again. That you ran to the other side of the country to escape them.’’
“I did say that. But if I’ve learned anything in my thousand years of existence, is that you can’t run and hide from the Original family. And if they’re going to find me, I might as well find them. Plus, it’s been almost 50 years, maybe they do deserve yet another chance.’’
He cracks a smile, trying to reassure me that our little trip to the city of jazz won’t be our last. But I’m nervous. The Original family is famous, feared through the whole supernatural world. And now I’m going to visit them, with one of their brothers, who they killed multiple times. Who had spent half is life in a coffin thanks to his little brother who has terrible anger management issues but could kill a vampire just by biting them.
After another 7 hours we drive of the highway and into the city of New Orleans. Kol parks the car somewhere in the outskirts and we decide to walk to the place he believes his family will be. New Orleans is absolutely stunning. The old building give a serene calmness to the busy streets, the jazz music playing brings life to those same streets. Everything together has an calming and uplifting effect on me. Kol was right, I love this place.
We eat like a normal couple in one of the many bars. Sitting in a corner, observing everyone who comes is. According to Kol we’re not far from the compound of his siblings. A brunette with kind eyes takes our order and when she brings it to our table we eat in silence.
‘’Y/N’’
‘’Yes?’’ I just swallow my last bite and sit back, looking at Kol’s face, his eyes stand concerned.
‘’When we get there, let me do the talking. I don’t know how they think about us being here, and on second thought I maybe shouldn’t have brought you here at all. Klaus is instable, he is strong, I can’t fight him if he attacks.’’
I sigh, leaning over the table and taking his soft hands in mine.
‘’It’s all right, I can wait here if you want, give you time with your family. Let them get used to the fact that their runaway brother has returned before introducing them to the one he brought along.’’
He smiles, knowing it’s taking a lot of me to offer to stay behind. I rather be by his side, help him fight if necessary, or just being there for him. I know I won’t stand a chance against any of his siblings, but I won’t let him fight alone if it comes to it.
‘’No, I’m an egoistic person, I want you with me. I need you with me. That’s the whole reason I took you with me.’’
He leans further over the table, grabbing my chin and pulling me towards him. His lips meet mine in a demanding way. He doesn’t ask, he takes.‘’I love you Y/N, please know that.’’
‘’I know. And Kol, I love you too.’’
He smiles before letting go of my chin and standing up.
‘’Let’s go.’’
We walk the rest of the way to the compound. His hand in mine the whole way. All around us we can spot the supernatural creatures among the mundane crowd. Vampires with daylight rings are scattering the colorful streets.
The compound is beautiful. The old building stands with all its charm, but there is a certain dangerous vibe hanging over the building. Kol squeezes my hand and then lets go of it completely. He steps in front of me before walking through the iron gate at the entrance of the compound.
He swings open the big wooden doors and walks in like he has done nothing else for the last 50 years. I follow a bit behind, looking around me to notice every little thing about my environment. He doesn’t call out to his siblings, instead he just stands in the middle of the room, saying nothing. I stand a couple of feet behind him, observing the scene in front of me.
Suddenly I feel a blunt force against my left side and before I know it I’m up on the balustrade, a strong hand holding my arms against my back, another hand holding a piece of wood against my chest.
“Welcome brother.” A thick accent sounds behind me, a hint of arrogance in his voice.
