I walked up the stairs to my room.
Jennifer was sitting on the bed, but she jumped up right when I walked in.
"I hope you don't mind that I was sitting on your bed." She said.
"No! Go ahead and sit down!"
"Thank you."
*Awkward silence for like a minute*
We both started laughing.
"That was enlightening!" I said.
Then we laughed a whole lot more.
"So what made you move here?" I asked after about 5 minutes of laughing.
"Well, my father was in the army, but he was killed, and my mom has family here. So we moved all the way from Minnesota to come live here." She forced a smile for the last sentence. I could tell it was really hard for her.
"I'm so sorry!" I said as I gave her a hug.
"Do you mind if a ask what happened to your parents? If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. I'm just curious." She asked after the hug.
"No, it's okay. Nine years ago, my family—My mom, dad, brother and I— was on our way to a restaurant to eat dinner, and there was a car on the wrong side of the road. The car hit us, and my brother and father were killed instantly. My mom and I were just hurt really bad. When we got out of the hospital our house never felt the same. I lost my relationship with her after that, and it's like we were living different lives in the same house. A little over a week ago she...." tears began running down my face "she killed herself. Said she couldn't take the pain anymore. So my Aunt came to take care of me until I was ready to be on my own."
I shakily inhaled and my exhale was a sob.
Jennifer hugged me tight. Tears started to run down her face too.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to start crying," I said muffled against her shoulder.
"You cry all you want. No one should have to go through that alone. But you have me now." She said reassuringly.
So I cried for 15 minutes in front of Jennifer. And it was odd....it felt good. Refreshing. To have someone who doesn't judge you.
She had to go home after we talked a little bit more, but I felt really happy. For the first time I felt real happiness.
