Clary's POV

It's been one week since the Captain called. He gave me two weeks to decide and I still have no idea what to do.

I'm home alone, laying on the couch, looking at the pearl colored walls of my apartment. I get up and grab a sweater, leaving the house.

I walk through the almost empty street of Manhattan. The cold January breeze hits me and I try to hug myself to feel a little more warm. I should have dressed better with something that would keep me warm but I don't care anymore.

I keep walking until I get to the bar I was one week ago, the day I got that offer from the Captain.

I get in and look around. The place is almost empty but I couldn't expect much on a Monday night. I go to the bar and find a golden haired man. Jace. I looked at him. His hand held a firm grip around the glass of Scotch. It was like the glass was a part of him and he'd lose a piece of himself if he let go of the glass. He took one last sip and finished the glass.

"Keep them coming, Joe." He spoke from across the bar. His voice was tired and bored, like he has said that a thousand times before. The bartender, Joe, poured more of the brown liquid on the glass.

I look at my phone. 11.35pm, Monday, 18th January. Jace's birthday. How could I forget this?

Alec is out of town and I thought Jace was with him. But now I see that he isn't. Instead, he's spending his birthday as a party for one. Well, two, if you count Joe.

"Happy birthday." I say, getting closer. His golden hair was messy but he still looked handsome.

"What are you doing here?" He asks bored. His golden eyes meet mine for a few seconds but he looks back at his glass before taking another sip and finishing the drink again.

"I needed some time out of the apartment." I say. I look at the bartender. "Get me a martini please." I ask Joe. He nods and I turn to Jace. "What are you doing here?"

"Didn't feel like staying home." He says.

"But what about your grandma?" I ask.

"A lot has happened since we didn't talk, Clary. My grandma passed away." He says, coldly.

"I'm sorry." I say, looking down. The bartender comes up to me and gives me my drink.

"Not your fault. She passed away five years now." He says and finishes his drink again.

"I'm sorry for asking. I shouldn't have." I say. He looks at me, probably for the first time that conversation has started.

"Why are you even here? Don't you have a fiancé to go to?" He asks.

"Sebastian and I broke up. I just need to get away from the house for a while so I can make a decision." I say.

"What decision?" He asks. I look at him and he smirks.

"I got an amazing job offer." I say.

"Then take it." He says. As if it was that easy.

"I wish. If I accept it, I have to go to Italy for a year." I say. "I've always dreamed of going to Italy but I don't want to stay there for a year. Even though it's a great opportunity."

"Do what you think it's best." Jace says and I look at him confused. "You're the one who chooses. Make a choice you won't regret."

"What if I don't fit in?" I ask. I always wondered that but I never thought I'd be saying it out loud. I don't know why but saying things out loud makes them look real and I don't want that.

"Then I'll find you, remember? I'll always find you." He says and smirks. That sentence goes way back in high school when we were friends. We were watching a movie and I'm not the romantic type but I remember the boy in that movie say that to the girl. I was laying down on Jace's chest and he turned to me and said that sentence. I started laughing but it was cute.

I turn to him but he had already payed for everything.

"See you around." He says and leaves.

I stay there for a while before leaving too. I walk around the Manhattan streets for hours. This is probably not safe but I really don't want to go home or be with anyone I know. Then, I go home and sleep for a while. I couldn't sleep much, I was thinking of what to do.

I get lunch with my brother and then I dial the Captain's phone number. Come on, Clary. You can do this. I try to convince myself. Don't look back now, you've made your decision. I was about to call him when I get a call from Izzy.

"Clary, I need you." She says, sobbing.

"Izzy, what's wrong? What happened?" I ask worried.

"Raphael and I broke up." She says.

"I'm on my way there." I say and hang up.

I take a quick trip to a supermarket to buy chocolate and ice cream. Then, I go to Izzy's house and she opens the door. Her makeup is all ruined and her hair is messy.

"Come here." I whisper and hug her. We go inside and we start eating while watching movies.

"You're too good for him anyway." I say and she laughs a little bit.

"Thank you." She says and smiles.

We continue watching the movie until I get call on my phone.

"Who is it?" She asks. I look at my phone.

"The Captain." I say. "Hello?" I say as I answer it.

"Hello, Clarissa. I was calling to ask if you had an answer for my offer." He says.

I sigh. "Yes, Captain, I do have an answer." Izzy looks at me, waiting to know my answer. Is this the right choice?

"Well, what is it?" He asks.

I snap out of my thoughts. I have to do this. "I..."
