Shaun and Dr. Melendez parked in the front of the pet store.
"Andy's Pet Shop." Dr. Melendez said, pointing to a neon sign with the parrot attached.
"Yes," Shaun said, feeling around for the doorknob.
He pushed the door open and closed it gently. Dr. Melendez did nearly the same thing, except he slammed the door rather than gently closing it. Shaun fiddled with his fingers as he waited. They opened up the shop door and was immediately greeted with the usual smell of hay and pet food. They stood at the entrance for a second, taking in the view.
"It'sss...big," Shaun said, slowly.
"You got that right." Dr. Melendez said.
They started walking farther into the store when something flew upside down behind them.
"Hello, welcome to Andy's Pet Shop!" Something said behind them.
Dr. Melendez stopped in his tracks and Shaun quickly turned around. His eyes met an African grey parrot, who had an 'Andy's Pet Shop' bib around its neck.
"Hello," Shaun said to the parrot. Dr. Melendez turned around and grew surprised.
"Welcome to Andy's pet shop! I'm Chip!" The parrot said. Dr. Melendez smiled.
"Hi Chip. I'm Neil, and this is my friend Shaun." Dr. Melendez introduced.
"Neil and Shaun, Welcome to Andy's Pet Shop!" Chip repeated.
"You just said that," Shaun said, critiquing the parrot. Dr. Melendez looked around for the bunny spot, but couldn't see one.
"Hey Chip, where are the bunnies in the shop?" Dr. Melendez asked. Chip scratched its head.
"I'll show you." Chip said and flew above the aisles. Shaun and Dr. Melendez followed the grey parrot until they reached a bunch of cages with bunnies in them.
"Behold! Bunnies." Chip said. Dr. Melendez laughed.
"Thanks." Dr. Melendez said.
As soon as Shaun saw the bunnies, he smiled widely. Chip flew towards a door with a big bell and rung it with its feet. Soon, a young employee wearing a shop uniform opened that very door and noticed the two young men looking at the bunnies.
"Would you like to hold one?" The employee asked as he grabbed a pair of cage keys out of his pocket. Dr. Melendez nodded and moved out of the way. Shaun pointed to the rabbit and watched the employee open the door and pull the rabbit out. Then, he handed it to Shaun.
"This one is called Oreo." The employee said.
Shaun held the rabbit close to him and started to pet its ears. As soon as his fingers stroked the narrow bunny's relaxed ears, He began to feel relaxed. This was a sensation he hasn't felt, in more than a decade. All of the other white noises seemed to reduce in volume, due to his lack of attention to those very noises. It was a sensation he truly missed. Soon, his attention resumed, but his calm state seemed to remain. He soon realized that Dr. Melendez asked him a question about Oreo and his breed. Shaun used his savant abilities to figure this out.
"Oreo is a medium brown dee millen. He looks like he's between 5 and 7 years old, and he's a quieter bunny who yearns for human contact and love from his fellow bunny buddies." Shaun stated.
"Dr. Melendez looked at Shaun in shock. "How do you know that?" Dr. Melendez asked, curiously.
"Dee Millen rabbits have longer rabbit ears than some species, which are used for communicating body language. Right now, his ears are relaxed and his body is flat. He is more relaxed than when he was in the cage, confirming his interest in human contact. Before he was freed, he was wiggling his ears. He's been begging for human communication for a while." Shaun said, continuing to cradle the bunny in his arms.
Dr. Melendez smiled and pet the bunny on its back. As soon as Shaun saw Dr. Melendez's hand position, he moved his hand closer to the ears.
"Bunnies appreciate being petted on the head and the ears. They're not dogs, so they don't like being petted on the back." Shaun said.
"Oh." Dr. Melendez said, gently stroking Oreo's ears. Oreo moved its head towards Dr. Melendez's hand and started licking the fingers that were in front of him.
Shaun smiled. "He's attempting to groom you." Shaun translated. Dr. Melendez chuckled at the thought of a rabbit trying to groom his hairless hand.
"This feels so weird." Dr, Melendez said, both intrigued and excited at the same time.
"Do you wanna hold one?" The employee asked. Dr. Melendez thought about it for a minute.
"You know what? Sure. I'll hold one." Dr. Melendez said.
The employee took another bunny out of the cage and gave it to him. Dr. Melendez held onto it and started petting its ears. Immediately, Dr. Melendez started to feel calmer.
"Wow. I can see why you like holding bunnies." Dr. Melendez said.
"Oreo's not my childhood bunny. But he's a good bunny." Shaun replied.
After a while of holding the bunnies, the two surgeons decided to put the bunnies back. Shaun enjoyed holding a bunny again, even though it wasn't his bunny. They hopped into the car and Dr. Melendez decided to drop Shaun off at his apartment. They reached his apartment.
"Th...Thank you for...showing me Star Wars and for taking me to see the bunnies. I had fun." Shaun said.
"No problem Shaun." Dr. Melendez replied. Shaun hopped out of the car and started walking towards the entrance. Suddenly, Shaun had an idea and ran towards Dr. Melendez's car again. He knocked on the window and waited for Dr. Melendez to roll it down.
"What is it?" Dr. Melendez asked.
"Would you like to eat pancakes with me tomorrow?" Shaun asked.
"Tomorrow morning? Breakfast? Sure!" Dr. Melendez replied, asking for clarification beforehand. Shaun nodded and repeatedly mumbled the word 'okay' as he walked into the entrance of the motel building.
He pulled the door open, as he heard Dr. Melendez's car pull away.
