"I'm not going to raise a child that's not my own." That's what my fiancee told me the night I brought Benji home. I was just getting in and it was past midnight, Benji was asleep on my shoulder and I was struggling with his bags. That was the first thing he said to me, not. "Hi babe, how was your day?" or "I'm so sorry your sister and brother in law died, just a few hours ago." Not even a "Can I help you with your bags?" He had no consideration for me on my part at all, just selfishly thinking about himself. It didn't surprise me that he was in my apartment. No, we didn't live together. I was fond of my cozy apartment. It had only one bedroom, but really, I only needed one, an en suite bathroom and a guest bathroom, a huge kitchen, and about eight closets. I would be sad to leave it, but I was not going to sell it. It was the first thing I bought without my family's help, and I loved it. And as much as I didn't want to admit it, I dreaded the aspect of living with a guy. But he had a key to my apartment and vise-versa.
I quietly set Benji's bags down on the sofa and carried a stirring Benji over to the kitchen counter, Where my fiance, Marcus Calloway was.
I pressed my lips in a hard line at stared at my fiancee for a moment. Physically speaking Marcus was almost the perfect male specimen. His dark hair curled over thick, dark eyebrows in the most handsome way, he had a straight nose, perfect white teeth, full lips even for a man, smoldering chocolate eyes, and a chiseled face, as well as a toned body.
He also had a good career. He was junior partner at his father's law firm. A year ago he was rated number seventeen on Forbes list of "The upper east side's most eligible bachelors". I should be proud that I took him off that list.
But as beautiful as he was on the outside, he was as ugly as a person could get on the inside. He was selfish, arrogant, and basically summing it up in a couple of words. A big fat male organ. I didn't love him. Our marriage would have been one of convenience, not love. Our families, the Dalton's and the Calloway's had basically planned our marriage since we were in diapers and I had no problem with marrying Marcus, he was a friend.
Well, he used to be one of my friends. We grew up together. His selfish ways didn't make themselves known until after we got engaged, and I finally had enough. I twisted the imposing three carat engagement ring he got for me off my finger, my finger feeling weirdly liberated, and held it tightly in my hand as I shifted a sleeping Benji to my left shoulder.
"Are you asking me to choose between my nephew and you?" I asked, my voice perfectly calm. I didn't want to raise my voice and frighten the baby, but my blood was boiling with anger and I glared at Marcus like he was the stupidest person in the world.
He was as oblivious to other's feelings as always and he gave me a hard nod. I sighed, more relieved than I should have been to get out of this arrangement and tossed him his ring, watching his eyes widen as he finally caught it after struggling horribly. He gaped at me when he finally got the gist of things.
"You gave me an ultimatum and I choose Benjamin." I whispered furiously. "I will always choose Benji. He's my nephew for god's sake." I looked down at Benji and he was looking at me with wide blue eyes, so much like my sister's. I swallowed down my tears and gave him a smile which he returned with a dimpled giggle. His smile was so loving, I almost forgot about Marcus in the background.
"Are you breaking up with me?" His raised voice startled both Benji and me and I turned to him. His face was red with anger splotches and his eyes blazed with fury. But I rolled my eyes. I already had a child to raise, I didn't need another one and I had no patience for a grown man's tantrums. The way he emphasised the word "me" made it seem like I couldn't possibly break up with him. Because he was so above me in social standing. Yeah, right.
