"I can't go." I sighed the night of Wyatt's party. Three heads whipped my way and my mom, Luce, and Leslie all stared at me in disbelief.
"You can and you will." Luce told me with a challenging glare. I didn't know why she was so eager for me to get out, but she seemed stressed. Maybe her case wasn't going well, I would have to ask her later in private.
"Besides if you don't go, I can't go." Leslie whined. You'd think she'd be jetlagged, just getting back from Morocco just hours prior, but she insisted that she was on a different time schedule and she would sleep all day tomorrow. There was no way she was going to miss one of Wyatt Hathaway's parties. According to her, they were epic.
"You have to get out honey, Benji's only getting older and he's going to be pushing for a little sister or brother soon." She implied not subtle at all. It's been my mom's mission for me to find true love ever since I broke off that horrid engagement with Marcus. She never liked him, she didn't like the aspect of an arranged marriage at all and she couldn't have been happier that I was free from that commitment. But her meddling was beginning to take it's toll.
"What! No! That's not happening!" I blushed beet red. I was not having a kid anytime soon. I was still young, I wanted to wait at least until I was thirty. Yes, thirty was a reasonable age. I looked at Benji who was layed out on the pull out couch with my mother, snoring away and smiled then grimaced. "I can't do it! I can't leave him, what if he wakes up?"
"We can take care of Benjamin." Luce said, not looking up from her laptop. My mom looked at her.
"You mean, I can take care of Benjamin." Luce looked up then and I bit back a huge smug grin as my mom folded her arms. "Young lady, you are going to that party. Your mother told me you were overworking yourself and tonight you are taking a break." She scolded her and Leslie and I snickered, just like old times. Luce look chagrined.
"But-" She protested.
"No buts!" My mom closed her laptop and took it away from her like she was a child and settled a stern look on her. "And that's final!"
"Fine!" Luce sighed and we cheered. "But if I'm going then Cassie is going for sure."that wiped the grin off my face better than mister clean.
"Fine." I pouted and let them drag me off to get dressed.
We came out after what seemed like forever getting ready. I was never one of those girls who took forever to try on things. The first thing I chose was usually my pick, but my friends rejected every single one of my outfits and I ended up in this figure hugging, black, backless dress with gold accents and gold sandals, courtesy of Leslie. My hair was straightened by Leslie and my makeup was applied my Luce. They worked on me like I was their favorite doll and I did not apprieciate the sentiment.
Luce decided on a pair of black leather shorts and a hot pink, sleeveless, sheer button down. It had a edgy vibe and went great with her cat eye and side fishtail braid.
Leslie put on a mini tube dress that normally would have been scandalous on anybody else, but graceful on her. Her long chocolate legs went miles in that dress.
When we finally walked out of my room, the party had already been started for an hour. My mom approved of our outfits, eyes widening when she saw my bare back. I simply pointed to Leslie and shook my head and putting on my coat. I went to Benji and kissed his forehead. Suddenly I didn't want to go. Luce and Leslie must have seen my change of decision in my expression because before I knew it, I was being dragged by my arms.
"Make sure Benji has on a fresh diaper-"
"Okay." My mom said.
"And if he cries during the night make him some warm milk with honey, it puts him to sleep-"
